Overwhelmed by Emotion, Anchored by God
“When my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” — Psalm 61:2
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1
Overwhelm is heavy. It clouds thinking. It amplifies fear. It makes small things feel catastrophic.
When someone pulls away or changes tone, your body may react before your mind does. Anxiety rises. Old wounds resurface. Your thoughts spiral into worst-case scenarios.
David does not deny overwhelm. He names it.
“When my heart is overwhelmed…”
Not if. When.
Overwhelm does not mean you lack faith. It means you are human.
But David also prays, “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
Notice the language. Lead me. He recognizes that in overwhelm, he cannot always climb on his own.
Putting God first means running upward before running outward.
Before you send the text. Before you over-explain. Before you defend yourself. Before you chase reassurance.
Lead me to the rock.
Psalm 46 calls God “a very present help.”
Present.
Not distracted. Not intermittent. Not emotionally inconsistent.
If someone’s emotional unpredictability overwhelms you, that is information. But before you attempt to control the relationship, let God steady your nervous system.
The rock does not shift when waves hit it.
God does not fluctuate with someone’s mood.
Let Him anchor you first.

I’ve found that acknowledging these emotions openly—just like David did in the Psalms—helps me to stop fighting my feelings and instead invite God to lead me to a place of calm and stability. When I’m anxious or my thoughts swirl into worst-case scenarios, I remind myself that feeling overwhelmed is not a sign of weak faith; it’s an honest, human response. One practical step I take when overwhelmed is to pause and breathe deeply, consciously focusing on the idea of God as my "rock" and refuge. This imagery from Psalm 61:2 helps me visualize something solid and unshakeable, which stabilizes my racing mind. Also, instead of reacting impulsively—like sending texts or seeking reassurance—I try to slow down and pray for guidance to be led to that higher rock, knowing I can’t always climb on my own.
