Still Time! Fall Flowers for Zones 7โ€“13๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿ‚

... Read moreDonโ€™t put away your gardening gloves just yet! As a fellow garden enthusiast, I've learned that extending the beauty of your outdoor space well into autumn is entirely possible, even in zones like 7, 8, and beyond. There's a unique satisfaction in seeing vibrant blooms when others might be winding down their gardening efforts. Itโ€™s all about choosing the right plants and knowing the best time to get them in the ground. For those of us in Zone 7, the question of "when to plant cosmos seeds" often comes up, especially if you're hoping for a late-season show. I remember my first attempt at cosmos โ€“ I planted them too early, and while they bloomed, they faded fast. Through trial and error, I've found that for Zone 7, the sweet spot for direct sowing cosmos seeds is typically after the danger of the last frost has completely passed, usually from late April through May. If you're eager for earlier blooms, you can start cosmos seeds indoors about 4-6 weeks before your last frost date. This gives them a head start, and you can transplant the seedlings out once the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost is gone. Cosmos, like the lovely pink cosmos I saw thriving in Zone 8, prefer full sun and well-draining soil that isnโ€™t overly rich โ€“ too much fertilizer can lead to more foliage and fewer flowers. Regular deadheading will encourage a continuous display of their cheerful, daisy-like blossoms right up until the first hard frost. Adding a splash of blue flowers to your fall garden can create a stunning contrast with the traditional oranges, yellows, and reds of autumn. Iโ€™ve always found that blue hues bring a sense of calm and depth, making the other colors truly pop. If you're looking to incorporate more blue, there are several fantastic options that can thrive in various zones mentioned, from 7 to 13. One of my go-to choices for blue is Salvia. Varieties like 'Victoria Blue' or 'May Night' offer intense blue-purple spikes and are incredibly attractive to hummingbirds and pollinators. Many salvias are perennial in Zones 7 and up, returning year after year with minimal fuss. Another excellent pick, especially for Zones 9 and warmer, is Blue Daze (Evolvulus glomeratus), a low-growing plant with true sapphire-blue flowers that bloom profusely. For those in Zone 10, as the OCR mentioned, Torenia (Wishbone Flower) can also provide beautiful blue and purple shades, and it's perfect for partial shade locations, adding color where other sun-lovers might falter. Don't forget about Asters, which were highlighted for Zone 7 in the OCR. Many aster varieties boast gorgeous blue and purple flowers that are absolute workhorses in the late fall garden, providing essential nectar for migrating monarch butterflies. They are generally hardy perennials, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil. For a unique blue groundcover, consider Leadwort (Ceratostigma plumbaginoides). This plant offers vibrant blue flowers in late summer and fall, and its foliage turns a beautiful reddish-bronze as temperatures drop, adding a double dose of autumn appeal to Zones 5-9. Ageratum, or Floss Flower, is another annual option for a soft, fluffy blue texture in containers or borders. No matter your zone, with a little planning, you can fill your fall garden with an array of stunning blue blooms that will make your autumn display truly unforgettable. Happy planting!
