Reno: DIY Mould Removal 101 🧽🍋

This is for those who wants to DIY removing mould from the ceiling themselves!

Got a resale flat recently and 2 rooms had mould inside so sharing based on personal experience and also a few lemon8 posts that I read before I dare to start 🥹

Q1 Which products to use?

I used 2 different products

1️⃣ DIY mixture of 5% Bleach & 95% water solution (I use HomeNiks Bleach from my parents’ house so just grab whatever you have 😄)

2️⃣ Magiclean Mould Remover

Q2 What are the equipments you need to prepare?

1️⃣ Floor fan for ventilation to prevent the odour or smell from staying in the room 😵‍💫

2️⃣ Floor protection (paint sheets, newspaper, cardboard) to prevent the chemical solution from damaging your floor 🥹

3️⃣ PPE to protect yourself in case there are droplets that enter your eyes and cause injury

👀 - Googles

👱🏻‍♀️ - Hair Net

🙌🏻 - Rubber Gloves

😀 - Mask

👣 - shoe cover

overall body - raincoat (wore it at the start

but nah its too hot in it & not much solution

dripping to be of concern)

4️⃣ Ladder to reach the ceiling

5️⃣ Magiclean Wipe & Mop Stick + Dry Sheet to scrub the ceiling for mild moulds + Pail or container (big enough to dip the wipe & mop head inside to soak with DIY bleach mixture)

6️⃣ Magiclean Mould Remover + 3M Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Sponge to scrub the ceiling for tougher to remove moulds

7️⃣ Damp cloths

Q3 What are the steps?

1️⃣ Prepare the DIY bleach mixture in the pail/container. You should have both the DIY mixture and a bottle of magiclean mould remover.

2️⃣ Open the windows to ensure ventilation.

3️⃣ Cover all furniture and floor with floor protection.

4️⃣ On the fan and ensure it is turning to ensure circulation.

5️⃣ Put on all the PPE to ensure you do not get injured!

❗️Googles are really important as sometimes the mould remover spray might generate droplets that enter your eye when the fan just now turn and blow it in your direction.

For mild mould:

6️⃣ Put the dry sheet onto the Magiclean Wipe & Mop stick.

7️⃣ Dip the dry sheet into the DIY bleach solution.

8️⃣ Wipe the ceiling with the solution. You should see it coming off if it is mild.

9️⃣ Wipe off with damp cloth after 20 minutes

For stronger / more stubborn:

6️⃣ Spray the magiclean mould remover on the Heavy Duty Sponge.

❗️I try not to spray at the ceiling as the droplets might accidentally fly into someone’s eyes when they happen to walk by.

7️⃣ Scrub where there is mould on your ceiling. (I tried leaving the solution on the ceiling but it doesnt come off 😢 so do accordingly to what works for you!)

8️⃣ Wipe with damp cloth after 20 minutes.

... Read moreBeyond just mixing bleach and using mold remover, maintaining a mold-free ceiling requires some ongoing care. After thoroughly cleaning the mold, ensure your rooms stay well ventilated to prevent moisture buildup that invites mold growth. Using a dehumidifier or keeping a window slightly open helps drastically. I also found routine ceiling inspections helpful. Sometimes, mold starts small and invisible unless you look closely, so checking frequently can save a lot of elbow grease later. When wiping the ceiling, a gentle but firm hand removes surface mold, but heavier scrubbing with a heavy-duty sponge helps with tough patches without damaging the paint. Safety cannot be overstated. Wearing goggles really saved me when mold remover droplets unintentionally sprayed toward my face. Also, protect your floors with ample sheets or newspaper to avoid bleach stains. If you’re dealing with significant mold areas, do consider protective clothing and perhaps multiple fans for better air circulation to avoid inhaling fumes. Lastly, sometimes commercial mold removers like Magiclean can be more effective on stubborn mold than bleach alone, so having both options ready is best. Stay patient and consistent; mold removal can be a gradual process but with the right approach, it’s totally doable.
