Reno: DIY Painting Metal Gate 101 🎨🍋

This post is for who wants a new look for their HDB metal gate without spending a hefty sum 👩🏻‍🎨👨🏻‍🎨

Here’s the materials needed and a step by step guide to give your gate a new look!

🎨 Materials required:

Cleaning cloth

Sandpaper

Masking tape

Floor protection

Ladder

primer

wood plank / stick (to stir the paint!)

Nippon Bodelac 9000 1L (sufficient for 2 coats)

turpentine

Brushes

🎨 Steps:

1️⃣ Clean the metal gate to get rid of dust.

2️⃣ Sand the parts that has rust until smooth (applicable for resale).

3️⃣ Lay floor protection.

This step is so important so as you do not have paint dripping on the floor outside your gate as well as your entrance! It is inevitable that you accidentally take too much paint and end up dripping some as a newbie 🥹🥹🥹

4️⃣ Tape up the parts that you do not want paint on!

Use masking tape to cover up the 4 lock latches and the floor near the frame. You can remove the door lock so that its easier for you to paint.

5️⃣ Start painting away!

You can opt to put one layer of primer if you want then continue on with 2 coats of nippon bodelac 9000. 1L is enough for 2 coats!

Rmb to prepare a wood plank or stick to stir the paint~

Also highly recommend that you paint the frame too for a coherent look.

tip 1: soak your brush in turpentine so that you still can use it the next day to continue painting!

tip 2: add in turpentine to your paint when you find it difficult to paint cause the paint gets too thick!

... Read moreTo add more value to your DIY metal gate painting project, choosing the right paint color is key to complement your home’s exterior. Nippon Bodelac 9000 comes in a variety of shades, so consider colors that blend well with your house wall or door colors for a harmonious look. Matte whites and subtle greys are popular choices for a clean, modern appearance. Safety is also important during your renovation. Always ensure you work in a well-ventilated area when handling primer and turpentine to avoid inhaling fumes. Wearing gloves and old clothing will protect your skin and keep you comfortable during the process. For those worried about rust, thorough sanding and applying rust-proof primer will extend your gate’s lifespan and maintain its beauty longer. This extra step helps prevent common metal gate issues in Singapore’s humid climate. Lastly, don’t rush your painting. Applying two thin coats rather than one thick coat provides better coverage and durability. If you find your paint thickening, adding a small amount of turpentine will make it easier to apply evenly. With patience and the right materials, you’ll achieve a fresh, durable metal gate look that enhances your home and reflects your personal style.

🚪Introducing the gate design we chose
When we were looking for the perfect gate, we knew we wanted a modern, clean look. But we also live in the real world, where things get dirty. That’s why we fell in love with this design. While other gates have intricate patterns that trap dirt and are a nightmare to clean, we paid SGD 300 more

The first house we had, we hired and ID…. Let’s just say it didn’t go really well…. Hence this time, we decided to go with a contractor instead since we already knew what we want to do and all I can say is, best decision ever 💯 Also pocket friendly 🤣🤣
