I hate reviewing part ones of films—it’s like judging a book when you’ve only read the first half. So much rides on the second part answering questions and completing the story. But if I set that aside and focus solely on this film as it stands, Wicked is both intriguing and frustrating.
As a prequel, it struggles because it feels like it’s retconning The Wizard of Oz. There’s this current trend of giving antagonists deep backstories that make them “good,” but then their descent into villainy feels rushed and underdeveloped. Wicked is no exception.
That said, if you approach this as an interesting “what if” and enjoy it as the musical spectacle it is, Wicked truly shines. The music is engaging, the songs are catchy, and its commentary on societal issues feels relevant. Unfortunately, I couldn’t shake my issues with the plot and lore—it just doesn’t make sense to me.
This film pairs best with a Hybrid strain. Anything else might leave you with a head full of unwarranted questions that could ruin your experience. A Hybrid helps you enjoy Wicked for what it is—a visually stunning, musically captivating ride.
