The Adanson’s monstera (Monstera adansonii)

... Read moreGetting a new Monstera Adansonii, often called the Swiss Cheese Plant or Swiss Cheese Vine, is such a joy! Like many plant parents, I was thrilled to welcome this beautiful vine into my home. The initial repotting is crucial for its long-term health, and I wanted to share a bit more about how I approach caring for my Swiss Cheese Monstera to keep it truly glowing! When I repotted my Adansonii, I made sure to choose a pot that wasn't too much larger than its original nursery pot, maybe just an inch or two wider. This prevents overwatering and potential root rot. For soil, I opted for a chunky, well-draining mix, usually a blend of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This mimics its natural epiphytic environment and provides the aeration its roots need. Gently loosening the roots and positioning the plant at the same depth it was previously helps reduce transplant shock. After repotting, a good drink of water and placing it in a bright, indirect light spot helps it settle in. Beyond repotting, consistent Monstera Adansonii care is key to seeing your plant thrive and produce those characteristic fenestrated leaves. They love bright, indirect light – too much direct sun can scorch those delicate leaves, while too little can lead to leggy growth and fewer holes. Watering is another important aspect; I let the top two inches of soil dry out completely before watering again. Sticking a finger into the soil is the best way to check. These plants also appreciate higher humidity, which is why I often mist mine or place it near a humidifier, especially in drier indoor environments. Regular feeding during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength keeps those leaves vibrant and so glowing, just like my new one! One of the most exciting parts of owning a Monstera Adansonii is watching a new leaf spear emerging. These start as tightly rolled tubes and slowly unfurl, revealing their fresh green color and eventually those iconic 'swiss cheese' holes. To encourage larger leaves and a more mature look, providing a moss pole or trellis for your Swiss Cheese Vine to climb can make a huge difference. In its natural habitat, this plant climbs trees, and mimicking that support encourages aerial roots to attach, leading to more vigorous growth and larger, more fenestrated leaves. Even observing the distinct shape and pattern of each Monstera Adansonii leaf is a delight. Beyond its beauty, bringing a Monstera Adansonii into your home offers several benefits. Like many houseplants, it contributes to cleaner air and can boost mood and productivity. While there isn't a specific ancient meaning tied solely to the Adansonii, the broader Monstera genus often symbolizes growth, longevity, and honor in various cultures due to its resilience and dramatic appearance. Owning one truly connects you with nature, even indoors. From the initial joy of receiving this beautiful plant to watching it flourish, the journey with a Monstera Adansonii is incredibly rewarding. Happy planting, fellow enthusiasts!
