What You Should Know About Travel Credit Cards

Someone on Tiktok asked me to break down the travel credit cards I use so here’s the gist for beginners or newbies:

💰BILT REWARDS (Visa) is a great card to use if you want to earn travel points through rent payments. You pay your rent directly through the app and can redeem your points for workout classes, restaurant visits, hotels and more. However, I use my points for flights because they have really great redemption bonuses on the 1st of the month.

Annual fees: NONE

💰💰Hilton Honors (Amex) was my first travel card and I got it because there was a sign up bonus of 30,000 points (which I used for a free night at a hotel). I use the card for everyday purchases in the US because most countries do not accept Amex, but I keep the card because I redeem the points for hotel stays at Hiltons all over the world.

Annual Fees: NONE

💰💰💰Chase Sapphire Reserve (Visa) is a card that many people recommend if you’re a traveler that wants TSA precheck, lounge access, and credits to various stores for shopping. I already have precheck and lounge access and the store credits aren’t for stores that I normally shop with so it wasn’t worth me having this card, given the $500 annual fee. However, if you can use these benefits, you should try it out yourself.

Annual fees: $500

... Read moreHey fellow travelers! So, you're thinking about diving into the exciting world of travel credit cards? It can feel a bit overwhelming, especially if you're a beginner. From my own journey, I’ve learned a few things that I wish I knew when I started. First off, as my beginner guide images suggest, if you're currently a student, have bad credit, or rarely travel, it's often best to focus on building your credit score first with a basic card. Travel cards offer amazing perks, but they require responsible use. Let’s talk about the general pros and cons of these powerful financial tools. On the upside, travel credit cards can unlock incredible experiences like free flights, complimentary hotel stays, airport lounge access, and valuable travel insurance. The sign-up bonuses alone can often fund an entire trip! Plus, earning points on your everyday spending means your regular purchases contribute to your next adventure. However, there are downsides to consider: some cards come with high annual fees, redemption processes can be complex, and there's always the temptation to overspend. Always check for foreign transaction fees if you travel internationally, and be aware that points values can sometimes change. Choosing your first travel card wisely is crucial to aligning with your travel goals and spending habits. Don't just pick what everyone else has – think about what works for *you*. Do you travel a lot with a specific airline, like Alaska Airlines or Delta, or stay at certain hotels, such as Hilton? Co-branded cards often offer fantastic value with loyalty perks. Consider your biggest spending categories: if groceries or dining are a major part of your budget, look for cards that offer bonus points there. If you pay rent, a card like BILT Rewards, which I use, can be a game-changer for earning points. Are you chasing a big sign-up bonus to kickstart your travel hacking? These can be incredibly rewarding but require meeting a spending threshold. For long-term stability and value, it’s important to pay attention to a few key details. Always understand the redemption rates – how much are your points actually worth when you redeem them for flights or hotels? This can vary significantly between programs and change over time. Re-evaluate annually if a card's benefits still justify its annual fee. And most importantly, always pay your balance in full and on time. Maintaining a good credit score is the foundation for responsibly enjoying all the amazing travel perks these cards offer. Happy travels and happy points earning!
