Things About Japan That Would SHOCK Americans

2024/7/5 Edited to

... Read moreHaving just returned from my first adventure in Japan, I can honestly say it was unlike any trip I've ever taken. The original post touches on the 'shock' factor, and I completely agree! I wanted to dive deeper into some of the specific things that truly surprised me and share essential advice I wish I’d known, especially for my fellow Americans planning a visit. One of the most immediate and delightful culture shocks was the incredible cleanliness everywhere. Seriously, even the public restrooms were spotless and modern – a stark contrast to what you often find elsewhere! This extends to the streets, public transport, and even busy tourist areas. It made navigating the cities so much more pleasant. Another thing that truly stood out was the unparalleled politeness and efficiency. People are incredibly respectful, and public transportation, like the trains I took on the Osaka Metro Group, runs with military precision. I rarely encountered delays, and everyone was so orderly. It's a system designed to work seamlessly, and it really enhances the travel experience. And speaking of cool things, don't miss the arcades! I was amazed to see adults of all ages enjoying claw machines and rhythm games with such enthusiasm. It’s a fantastic way to experience a piece of modern Japanese popular culture, especially on a rainy day or evening out under the bright neon signs of a city like Tokyo or Osaka. From the culinary delights to the whimsical treats, Japan's food scene is a 'bucket list' item in itself. I was charmed by everything, including trying a gigantic, fluffy matcha cotton candy outside a beautiful temple in Kyoto. It's such a unique blend of traditional and modern, and the flavors are simply unforgettable. Many people ask, 'Is Japan safe to visit for Americans?' Based on my experience, the answer is a resounding YES. I felt incredibly safe, even walking alone at night in major cities. The crime rate is remarkably low, and people are generally very helpful. However, like anywhere, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings. A specific safety feature I noticed, particularly for women, were the women's only cars on the metro during peak hours. While I didn't personally need to use them, it's reassuring to know these options exist and reflect the country's proactive approach to public safety and comfort. For any gamer, a visit to Japan isn't complete without experiencing Nintendo. I managed to visit Nintendo TOKYO in Shibuya, which was an absolute blast for merchandise and photo ops. If you're heading to Osaka, Universal Studios Japan’s Super Nintendo World is an immersive experience like no other – definitely a top 'bucket list' destination for fans! Overall, Japan offers a unique blend of ancient traditions and futuristic innovation, all wrapped up in a package of incredible hospitality and safety. It truly exceeded all my expectations, and I hope these insights help you prepare for your own unforgettable journey!
