How long you think my tongue is? 🤣
Okay, so my last post was super short, just asking 'How long do you think my tongue is?' And honestly, I've been thinking about it a lot lately! It started with a silly challenge online, but then it got me genuinely curious: what is a normal tongue length? And how do you even measure it accurately? It turns out, I'm not the only one wondering! So many of us have pondered if our tongue is 'average,' whether it's longer or shorter than our friends', or if it just feels 'normal.' Our tongues are such a vital, yet often overlooked, part of our anatomy, used for everything from tasting delicious food to speaking clearly. So, a little curiosity about their physical attributes is totally natural. If you’re like me and want to put your curiosity to the test, measuring your tongue isn't as straightforward as it sounds, but it's doable! The most common way is to measure from the tip to the epiglottis, but obviously, that’s not something we can easily do at home. For a rough estimate you can do yourself, try this: Open wide: Stand in front of a mirror. Stick it out: Extend your tongue as far as comfortably possible. Measure: Use a flexible ruler or a piece of string and then measure the string against a ruler. Measure from the tip to where it meets the floor of your mouth. This isn't super scientific, but it gives you a fun personal benchmark! Now for the burning question: what's considered average? Research suggests that the average length of an adult human tongue, measured from the epiglottis to the tip, is about 10 centimeters (approximately 3.9 inches). However, if you're just measuring the visible, extended part, it will naturally be shorter. There can be quite a range, and what's 'normal' is actually pretty broad! It's interesting how many factors can play a role. For instance, men tend to have slightly longer tongues on average than women. Genetics obviously play a huge part, just like with any other body part. And let's not forget the famous 'Gene Simmons' type tongues – some people just naturally have significantly longer ones! And remember, 'functional' length is often more important than absolute length. So, after my little home measurement experiment, I found... well, I'm not going to spill my exact number just yet! But it was super fun to try and compare notes. It really highlights how unique we all are. Have you ever measured your tongue? What did you find?
