So you want to keep bees? 🐝

Honey bees are incredible creatures. They, along with their other pollinator cousins, ensure we have beautiful flowers and bountiful food. Honey and bee pollen have been known to have a multitude of benefits, especially when it comes to allergies.

Whether your motivation is a love of bugs, bee products like honey, or a love of pollinators and sustainability, there are many fantastic reasons to get to beekeeping. But where should you start?

This post is meant to give you a launching point for your research into the world of bees and beekeeping, and hopefully help determine whether having hives is for you!

1. Is it legal where you live? This may sound funny but especially in more suburban and urban areas there are generally laws related to livestock, which can include bees. So before you start investing any money, check with your local government first.

2. Find your local beekeeping association. Not only are they a great resource for information but they can also provide classes and mentorship programs to make sure you feel supported and answer your questions.

3. Bee School! Your local beekeeping association or even some apiaries themselves offer ’Bee School” which will cover everything from setup, inspections, pest management and prevention, winterization (depending on your climate) and nutrition. This is a MUST in my opinion.

4. Space, food and water. Bees are livestock; at the end of the day you are responsible for feeding, watering, and otherwise ensuring the survival of the colony. Bees will travel up to 5 miles to forage, but ensuring there’s a variety of flowers/food sources, accessible water sources and space for your hives is essential to proper health. This also includes finding sitters for vacations.

5. Talk to your neighbors. Now, everyone I’ve talked to was really excited about us getting bees because everyone is really excited about honey, including our neighbors. That being said, it’s good to talk to your neighbors just in case they have concerns like bee sting allergies or if they spray pesticides which could negatively affect your hives. Again, bees will forage up to 5 miles. I know that’s a large radius of neighbors, but it’s better to be all on the same page and you can at least bribe most of them with honey. 🍯

Last thought before I wrap up this post. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions you might have about getting started beekeeping. I’m new to it so I may not be able to answer all your questions, but I am happy to help in anyway that I can, or put you in touch with other more experienced people. 💖

... Read moreOkay, so you've done your homework, checked the legality, found your local association, maybe even signed up for Bee School – congratulations, you're well on your way to becoming a beekeeper! But once you have your hive, how do you make sure it's not just surviving, but truly thriving and being productive? I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed after securing my first set of bees, wondering what came next. One of the biggest lessons I learned early on was that 'productive bees' start with a healthy, well-managed beehive. Beyond just having space, food, and water, thoughtful hive placement makes a huge difference. I found that placing my beehive where it gets morning sun helps them get active earlier, but also has some afternoon shade to prevent overheating in summer. It’s all about finding that sweet spot for your local climate! Regular, gentle inspections are also key. You're not just looking for honey; you're checking for a healthy queen, enough food stores, and signs of pests or disease. Preventing swarms, for example, is crucial for maintaining a strong colony and maximizing honey production. A strong colony means more busy honey bees foraging and bringing back nectar and pollen. Speaking of pollen, let's talk about 'bee bread.' When I first heard the term, I pictured tiny loaves of bread! But it's actually incredible. Bee bread is essentially pollen that worker bees have collected, mixed with nectar and enzymes, and then packed into honeycomb cells. They then cap it off, and it ferments slightly. This fermentation process makes the nutrients in the pollen more digestible for the bees. It's their primary source of protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals, especially vital for feeding the developing larvae. Without good quality bee bread, your colony won't be able to grow strong and healthy, affecting its overall productivity. Ensuring your honey bees have access to a variety of pollen sources throughout the year is super important for their 'bee bread' supply. Healthy bees make for productive bees! Now, let's address something every beekeeper eventually encounters: the occasional 'angry bee' or a hive that seems a bit feisty. I've definitely had my moments! It’s important to remember that bees are wild animals, and their temperament can vary. Factors like genetics, weather, time of day, and even how you approach the hive can influence their mood. My biggest tip? Move slowly and deliberately. Jerky movements can alarm them. Always wear your protective gear – it's there for a reason! Learning to use a smoker properly is also a game-changer; it calms them down by masking alarm pheromones and encourages them to fill up on honey, making them less inclined to sting. If a hive is consistently aggressive, despite your best efforts, it might be a sign that the queen has a more defensive genetic line, and requeening with a calmer queen can often resolve the issue. Don't get discouraged by a few stings; it's all part of the learning curve! Embarking on this beekeeping adventure is truly a continuous learning process. Each season brings new challenges and joys, and watching your colony thrive is incredibly rewarding. Keep learning, keep observing, and enjoy the sweet rewards!

Do you know where bees poop?
Worker honey bees are extremely clean and avoid defecating inside the hive under normal conditions. Instead, they hold their feces in the rectum and wait for suitable flying weather to take “cleansing flights” and poop outside. In winter, they can hold it for weeks or even a couple of months, depen
