Mullein Torch From Discarded Stalks

Y'all realize mullein season never actually ends. When just the dried stalks are left we make hag torches like this. Sorry not sorry. Though you can use other dried herbs/flowers to adorn your torch. Hag torches have been used since ancient times and are so fun to make. Perfect illumination on our dark winters in the mountains.

EDIT since someone said I'm "wasting medicine" these are the dead leftover stalks left at the end of the season. You can tap them out to save seeds and then use them for the torches. I personally don't because I have 40 acres and mullein everywhere. It's very invasive. Infact I have a massive patch where the ground was disturbed with a bulldozer in addition to it growing scattered everywhere else. You can not do anything with the old dead stock. Making torches I make sure nothing goes to waste. - Sam

... Read moreBuilding on the idea of making the most of mullein, I wanted to share some of my experiences with harvesting different parts of the plant, especially since the discussion often revolves around not letting anything go to waste. It's truly amazing how versatile mullein is, and knowing when and how to gather its leaves and flowers can open up so many more natural crafting and wellness possibilities. When I first started exploring mullein, I focused a lot on the torch aspect, but soon realized the leaves have incredible value too. I usually look for the large, fuzzy basal leaves in the first year of the plant's growth – they're so soft! The best time I've found for harvesting them is in late spring or early summer, before the flower stalk really shoots up. I try to pick them on a dry day, gently pulling them from the base, making sure to leave plenty for the plant to thrive. Afterwards, I lay them out on screens or hang them in bundles in a well-ventilated, shady spot until they're completely dry. They should be crisp and crumble easily. I've found these dried leaves are perfect for teas or even making compresses, offering a soothing remedy. The mullein flowers are another treasure, and honestly, they're a bit more delicate to harvest. These usually appear in the second year, on that tall, majestic stalk. I pick them when they're fully open, typically in mid-to-late summer. It's a bit of a daily ritual for me, walking through my patch and carefully plucking the bright yellow blooms. They don't dry well for storage like the leaves, so I typically use them fresh. My favorite way is to infuse them in oil – often olive oil or almond oil – to create a soothing ear oil. Just fill a jar with the fresh flowers, cover them completely with oil, and let it sit in a sunny spot for a few weeks, shaking daily. Strain it, and you've got a wonderful homemade remedy. This also ties back to the idea of adorning torches with dried flowers, as seen in some crafts; while the fresh mullein flowers don't always hold their color, other dried blooms can be incorporated beautifully onto the torch stalks. Speaking of torches, while the article touches on making them from the dried stalks, I've learned a few extra tips that really make a difference. After saving the seeds from the dead stalks (if you choose to, I often don't due to the abundance around me!), I make sure the stalks are completely dry and sturdy. Sometimes I'll even give them a light sanding to ensure a consistent surface. To get that long, steady burn, a good coating is key. I've experimented with beeswax and paraffin, often melting the wax in a double boiler and dipping the mullein stalks repeatedly, letting each layer dry. This creates that lovely, textured, yellowish substance I've seen in other crafters' work, and it's quite satisfying to build up. When I'm not using them, I often store my finished torches in a woven basket, upright, ready for my next outdoor adventure or just to light up a cozy evening. Always remember to use them outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, and keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for safety – fire safety is paramount, even with natural torches. It's all about respecting the plant and finding ways to utilize every part. From harvesting the leaves and flowers for their medicinal properties to transforming the 'discarded' stalks into beautiful, functional torches, mullein truly offers so much. It's incredibly rewarding to engage with nature in such a hands-on, sustainable way, ensuring nothing goes to waste and embracing the ancient traditions of crafting with what the land provides.
