So, what's actually going on when we cut into these notoriously tear-inducing veggies? Well, it's all thanks to a scientific reaction. When you slice into an onion, you break open its cells, releasing enzymes that mix with sulfur compounds. This creates a volatile gas called syn-propanethial S-oxide, which is the lachrymatory factor – basically, the stuff that irritates your eyes and makes them water up to flush it out. Knowing why we cry from onions made me even more determined to find a solution! That's where my favorite hack comes in, and honestly, it’s a total game-changer: swimming goggles! Yes, you read that right. It might sound a little silly, but trust me, it’s incredibly effective. I saw a picture once, kind of like the one with those two women in a kitchen, one rocking some orange swimming goggles while holding a peeled onion, and I thought, 'Why not?' The goggles create a physical barrier, preventing that irritating gas from reaching your eyes. It’s a simple, low-cost solution that genuinely works wonders. No more stinging, no more blurry vision, just smooth, tear-free chopping! Beyond standard swimming goggles, you can even find specialized 'onion glasses' or safety glasses designed for kitchen tasks. These often have a foam seal around the edges to ensure no gas seeps in. If you're serious about never shedding an onion tear again, investing in a pair of these could be a fun kitchen gadget! While goggles are my top pick, I've also experimented with other tricks. Ever heard of chilling your onions in the fridge or freezer for 30 minutes before cutting? The cold can slow down the release of those tear-inducing compounds. Another popular tip is to use a super sharp knife. A sharp knife makes clean cuts, damaging fewer cells and releasing less of the irritant compared to a dull knife that crushes the cells.
