It's MLK Day, and for many of us, it means a well-deserved day off. While my morning started with the usual duties – a bit of cleaning and breakfast for the kids – I really wanted to make sure this day was more than just a break. It's a powerful reminder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s incredible work and the enduring fight for civil rights. I’ve been thinking a lot about what "celebration and reflection" truly means on this day. For me, it’s about finding small, meaningful ways to honor his legacy, even amidst the everyday. Beyond just relaxing, I try to dedicate some time to truly reflect on the principles Dr. King stood for: justice, equality, peace, and service. One way I like to reflect is by revisiting some of his iconic speeches. It's amazing how relevant his words still are today. Sometimes I'll just put on a documentary about the Civil Rights Movement while I'm doing chores. There are so many great options available on platforms like YouTube, Peacock, or Sling – it's an easy way to educate myself and stay inspired without feeling like it's a chore. It really helps put my "MLK DAY OFF" into perspective. Another aspect of reflection for me is thinking about how I can incorporate his teachings into my own life. It doesn't have to be grand gestures. It could be as simple as practicing kindness, speaking up against injustice in my daily interactions, or making an effort to understand different perspectives. I try to talk to my kids about why we have this day off and what it represents, even in simple terms they can understand. We might read a children's book about Dr. King, which can spark really interesting conversations. As for celebration, it's not about throwing a party, but celebrating the progress that has been made and the hope he instilled. It’s also about recognizing that the journey continues. I find joy in seeing communities come together, in acts of service, and in the ongoing pursuit of a more equitable world. This year, I'm planning to use some of my relaxing time to volunteer virtually or donate to an organization that aligns with Dr. King's values. Even a small contribution can make a difference. It makes my 'MLK DAY' feel more purposeful. Afterwards, yes, I'll definitely enjoy some quiet time, maybe catching up on a good book or just enjoying the peace. But it's that balance of reflection, service, and mindful relaxation that truly honors the spirit of this important day. How do you all find ways to celebrate and reflect on MLK Day?
