Nursing Review: Fundamentals Packet
Introducing our first review packet. Created by a former Dean of nursing - highlighting those key fundamental concepts to help nursing students start off on the right foot in nursing school.
Nursing school is about building a strong foundation of knowledge that you will build upon as you move through the program. Memorization won’t work. So, we structure our reviews in a way to help you understand the why to retain and apply that information more effectively.

Hey future nurses! I remember feeling totally overwhelmed when I first started nursing school, especially with all the 'fundamentals.' It felt like there were a million basic nursing procedures to learn, plus complex concepts like medication administration and how to create a solid nursing care plan. But trust me, it gets easier when you learn how to approach it! One of the biggest game-changers for me was understanding how to think like a nurse rather than just memorizing. Our instructors always emphasized clinical judgment, and that’s where things like 'Safety & Priority frameworks' (think ABCs!) really click. When you're performing a 'Head to Toe Assessment & Vital Signs,' it's not just about getting numbers; it's about interpreting those 'red flags' and identifying signs of impaired 'Oxygenation & Perfusion' or imbalances in 'FLUIDS, ELECTROLYTES & HYDRATION.' For instance, when assessing an older adult client, it's vital to go beyond just checking 'contour, pain, range of motion, and symmetry.' You need to really home in on muscle 'tone, strength, size, and tenderness,' and also consider their 'skin integrity & pressure injury prevention' to catch issues early. It’s all about putting the puzzle pieces together to see the whole patient picture. Medication administration, for many, is a huge source of anxiety – and rightly so! 'Dosage CALCULATION' can seem daunting, but breaking it down into steps and practicing regularly makes a huge difference. Always prioritize 'Medication safety principles'; those five rights are sacred. Finding good practice questions with rationales, like those mentioned in the study packet, was key for me to really solidify my understanding and prepare for things like ATI Engage quizzes. And then there are nursing care plans. Whether it's for 'influenza' or any other condition, these aren't just busywork. They're your roadmap for patient care! Learning how to effectively identify nursing diagnoses, set measurable goals, and plan interventions truly elevates your practice. It reinforces those fundamental concepts and helps you see the bigger picture of patient recovery. Building a strong foundation in these areas isn't just for passing exams; it's for becoming a confident and competent nurse. Don't be afraid to break down complex topics, seek out resources that explain the 'why,' and practice, practice, practice. Using structured tools that simplify these fundamentals, like a comprehensive study packet, can seriously help you not just survive, but thrive in nursing school and beyond!
