Cathy’s First Appearance in Wuthering Heights
Cathy is such a complex character in “Wuthering Heights, and we are instantly introduced to that complexity when she is first introduced as a six year old child asking for a whip from her father. Although Mrs. Dean is sure to let us know that Cathy is an accomplished rider, the connotation behind asking for a whip cannot be ignored. It paints her as controlling & domineering… perhaps even a bit cruel.
And immediately on the next page, those suspicions are confirmed! She didn’t get that whip because her father was caught up trying to help a homeless boy (Heathcliff), and so she turns to the boy and takes her rage out on him by spitting on him — with a smile on her face.
This introduction certainly doesn’t bode well for the rest of her characterization. I wonder how the author will contrast Cathy’s cruelty to Heathcliff’s.
