Yookssam Naengmyeon

I recently stumbled upon Yookssam Naengmyeon in Guri, South Korea, and it was an absolute game-changer for my Korean food adventures! If you're anything like me, you've probably heard of or tried various types of Korean cold noodles, but Yookssam offers a truly unique experience. The name itself, "Yookssam," often refers to the delightful combination of cold noodles served with grilled meat, and let me tell you, it's a match made in heaven. When I visited, I was torn between the classic Mul Naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) and the fiery Bibim Naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles). The menu, as seen in the OCR, even features both prominently! I ended up trying both with a friend. The Mul Naengmyeon had this incredibly refreshing, savory broth, often made from a beef base or dongchimi (radish kimchi) broth, served with icy shards that instantly cool you down. It’s perfect for those hot Korean summers, or anytime you need a refreshing palate cleanser. On the other hand, the Bibim Naengmyeon was a burst of flavor – sweet, spicy, and tangy, all mixed with chewy buckwheat noodles and a vibrant gochujang-based sauce. The best part? You get to wrap the noodles around tender, smoky grilled meat (often referred to as 'gogi'), creating a symphony of textures and tastes. This is truly what sets Yookssam Naengmyeon apart from many other cold noodle places. It’s not just noodles; it’s a whole culinary event! While Yookssam Naengmyeon is a star, my curiosity also led me to explore the broader world of Korean cold noodles, including the famous Pyongyang Naengmyeon. I've tried Pyongyang Naengmyeon on a separate occasion, and it's quite a different beast. Known for its very mild, almost subtly bland beef or dongchimi broth and pure buckwheat noodles, it's an acquired taste for some. It's less about the bold flavors and more about appreciating the delicate, clean taste of the broth and the texture of the noodles. If you're looking for something with a stronger punch, Yookssam's offerings, especially the Bibim Naengmyeon, will be more up your alley, but Pyongyang Naengmyeon offers a unique cultural experience worth trying if you're adventurous. Beyond the standard cold noodles, the menu at Yookssam Naengmyeon, as highlighted by the OCR, also includes 육개장 (Yukgaejang), a hearty and spicy beef soup. This is a fantastic option if you're visiting with someone who prefers hot dishes or if you want to balance your cold noodles with something warm and robust. The prices, around 8,500 KRW for a bowl, are quite reasonable for such quality. A little tip for eating naengmyeon: don't be shy to ask for scissors to cut your noodles if they're too long! It makes eating much easier. For Mul Naengmyeon, many locals like to add a splash of vinegar and a dollop of mustard to customize the broth to their liking. Experiment a little and find your perfect balance! Finding this gem in Guri was so worth the trip. It’s definitely a place I’ll be revisiting.
