DIY bookmark
I made this fairly quickly by hand sewing and free-hand embroidering using fat quarters from Joann Fabric.
Materials:
cotton fabric
embroidery floss
embroidery sewing needle
Scissors
cardboard (I upcycled)
Directions (what i did):
Cut three 4" squares of fabric, two matching squares for the back and one different square for the triangle.
Fold the unmatched square into a triangle to find the mid-line and mark it with a fabric pen
Unfold and put it in a 3" hoop
add embroidery to only the part that would show.
fold the triangle and measure the cardboard about 1/4" smaller on the outsides so that it sits along the fold, and cut it to fit
place the cardboard inside the triangle, with the fabric right side out.
line up the top and side of the triangle with the other squares and sandwich it between the two, with the top and bottom layers wrong side facing out.
clip it all together on each side to hold it and backstitch along 3 sides, where you want the edges, about 1/4" from the edge of the fabric, and trim the corners.
fold everything inside out so that it looks like it does in the picture, (right side out)
blanket stitch around the free edge. you can blanket stitch along all edges, but I wanted to hide some of the edges.
I love how it holds the pages down and I can easily keep it in my book while I'm flipping pages. it's definitely a fun project for using up scrap fabric and thread.
