... Read moreHey everyone! I’ve been on a journey to really refine my professional presence, and one of the biggest game-changers has been upgrading my verbal communication. You know those moments when you feel like you’re not quite articulating your confidence or capabilities? I certainly did! I realized I was often using overused phrases to avoid in communication that actually undermined my authority, even when I didn't mean to. Learning better alternatives has been incredibly empowering, making me feel like I can truly talk like a boss. It's not just about what you say, but how you say it. For instance, instead of mumbling "I'm not sure," which can sound hesitant, I now confidently say, "Let me double-check and get back to you." This shows diligence and a commitment to accuracy, which is super important in any professional setting. Similarly, if I don't immediately know the answer, instead of a simple "I don't know," I've learned to say, "I'll find out and get back to you." It shifts from a passive admission to an active promise to deliver. Another big one for me was the habit of over-apologizing. When there's a delay or inconvenience, instead of "I'm sorry," I now opt for, "Thank you for your patience." It's a small shift, but it feels so much more appreciative and less self-deprecating. And let's be real, how many times have we started a question with "This might be a dumb question, but..."? I’ve totally been there! Now, I simply say, "I have a question about..." It's direct, confident, and respects my own intelligence. I also noticed I'd often say "I'll try" when committing to a task. While well-intentioned, it can sound non-committal. Switching to "I'll do my best" signals a stronger intention and dedication. And for expressing opinions, ditching "I guess" for "I believe..." instantly adds more conviction to your statements. It really does make a difference in how your ideas are received. Finally, managing workload and boundaries can be tricky. When someone asks for something I genuinely don't have immediate capacity for, instead of a blunt "I don't have time," I use a more professional and solution-oriented approach: "I need to prioritize my current tasks, so let's schedule a time to discuss this further." This respects my time while still being collaborative and helpful. By consciously choosing these phrases, I've seen a noticeable improvement in how I'm perceived and how effectively I communicate. It's about being intentional with your words to project confidence and competence. Give these "stop saying" and "say this instead" tips a try – you might be surprised by the positive impact on your professional interactions!
