This is the kind of meal that makes me forget I’m in public.
It’s Food Truck Friday, and I’ve never tried Salvadoran food before — so it was definitely time to fix that.
I stopped by El Salvador Pupuseria, and honestly… I have a lot to say. I walked up to the owner confused, excited, and already smiling by the time I took my first bite.
I started with two drinks. First up — the Tamarind Fresca. It blew me away — perfectly flavored, not too sweet, and the BEST way to start this meal.
Then he handed me this bright orange drink with zero explanation — and I’m so glad he did. It tastes like cream soda in the best way possible — creamy, fizzy, and totally unexpected because I was expecting a fruity drink.
Now for the star of the show — the pupusas.
These are handmade from scratch, and after one bite, I had to ask myself if I’ve EVER actually had a homemade tortilla before.
Like… is this even a tortilla? Or is this dough just magic?
Soft and pillowy on the inside, crisp and golden on the outside — total texture perfection.
I tried two kinds — chicken, and the Rebueltas, which has cheese, beans, and pork all mixed together. The cheese pull? Unreal. You know I live for that moment — and this one did not disappoint.
They’re served with curtido, this lightly fermented cabbage slaw, and a tomato salsa that ties it all together. The curtido is tangy, crunchy, and a little sour — and I honestly didn’t expect to love it as much as I did.
Then I moved on to the pastelitos — one chicken, one potato. And my mind was blown when I found out they’re made with the same dough as the pupusas.
They taste nothing alike — the owner just laughed and said, “It’s all in the spice,” and wouldn’t tell me the secret. Okay, okay, I see you.
They’re ridiculously crunchy and flavorful, topped with more cabbage and salsa — and I’m so glad I ordered more than one because… yeah, obsessed.
If you’ve never had Salvadoran food before, El Salvador Pupuseria is where you fix that.
Because I’ve definitely been missing out.
