PEAR PICKING:

Hey all!! New to this whole fruit tree thing - some fruit trees came with the house we bought in June! how do you know when it’s time for the pears to be picked? How long should they ripen on the counter before eating??

Side note - is it safe for chickens to have limitless access to pears or should we be picking the pears up off the ground? 😵‍💫

Typically, pears should be harvested when they are mature but still firm, as they ripen better off the tree. One reliable method is to gently lift and twist the pear; if it easily separates from the branch, it is ready to pick. Color changes and a slight softness near the stem also indicate ripeness. After picking, pears should be left to ripen indoors at room temperature, generally for about 3 to 7 days depending on the variety and initial firmness. During this period, they become softer and sweeter. To speed ripening, store pears in a paper bag with a ripe banana or apple, which release ethylene gas. Regarding poultry, pears can be a healthy treat in moderation, but unlimited access is not recommended. Fallen pears can ferment and attract pests or mold, which may harm chickens. It’s best to collect fallen fruit regularly to maintain cleanliness and prevent any health risks. By carefully monitoring ripeness and practicing safe feeding habits, gardeners can enjoy fresh pears while keeping their backyard flock healthy. This approach enhances both fruit yield and livestock well-being, making fruit tree care a rewarding experience for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike.

Pears are underrated. I always forget they exist until fall. 🍂 Now I want a pear tart.
