Suddenly I’m 36 and Working Out Hits Different

Some days I don’t feel like working out.

But I’ve realized the gym isn’t just where I build strength—it’s where I clear my mind, recharge, and reconnect with myself.

The physical changes are great, but the mental benefits keep me coming back.

... Read moreTurning 36 marked a significant shift in how I view my workouts. It’s no longer just about physical gains—it’s become a sacred time for mental clarity and emotional recharge. After trying various fitness routines in my 20s and early 30s, I found that workouts now offer a much needed reset from life’s daily stresses. For many of us, especially moms juggling work and family, carving out time for ourselves can feel impossible. But I’ve learned that dedicating even 30 minutes to exercise can profoundly impact how I feel throughout the day. It’s in those moments at the gym where I allow myself to disconnect from outside distractions and focus entirely on my body and mind. What truly stands out is the mental health boost. Physical activity releases endorphins that help combat anxiety and depressive moods. Beyond the chemistry, the discipline and accomplishment of sticking to a routine foster a strong sense of self-worth. This is especially powerful after postpartum, when reclaiming fitness feels like reclaiming identity. The hashtag #WomenWhoLift resonates deeply, as lifting weights has empowered me physically and mentally. Strength training not only sculpts the body but also builds resilience and confidence. Plus, engaging with communities who share similar journeys provides encouragement and motivation. In summary, turning 36 has transformed my fitness journey from a grind into a mindful practice. For anyone feeling resistance to working out, I recommend shifting the mindset from obligation to self-care—focusing on the mental recalibration rather than just the scale or mirror. The stronger, healthier body is just an added bonus on this path to holistic wellbeing.
