Cat parents please help!!!

Pepper is my husband and I's newly rescued kitten we found wandering the street with no mother or siblings in sight, so we suspect he was left on purpose 😔. He's very skinny, dirty, and covered in fleas, so we gave him a bath in dawn immediately.

We have 3 other indoor cats, 2 males and a female who are all fixed and vaccinated. Does anyone have any tips on how to introduce older cats to kittens? We're keeping everyone separated until he's vaccinated, but our female is a little territorial, and I don't want any of them getting hurt. Any advice at all is appreciated 🫶

Keeping the new kitten separated initially helps prevent stress and potential fights. You mentioned a territorial female cat, which is common since adult cats often view new intruders as a threat. A gradual introduction process involves letting the cats sniff each other’s scent before face-to-face meetings. Swap bedding between the cats so they get used to each other's smell. You can also feed them on opposite sides of a closed door to create positive associations. When you start supervised meetings, keep them brief and calm. Use toys and treats to distract and create positive interactions. If either cat shows signs of aggression or fear, separate them and try again later. It’s also important to monitor body language—hissing, flattened ears, or puffed tails signal discomfort. Since Pepper was found flea-infested and dirty, giving him a bath with a gentle dish soap like Dawn was a great move, as it effectively removes fleas without harsh chemicals. Remember to keep him warm and comfortable afterwards, as kittens can get chilled easily. Vaccination and vet checks are essential before allowing full contact with other cats to prevent disease transmission. Maintaining a clean environment and separate litter boxes initially reduces stress and potential conflicts. In my experience, older cats typically adjust after a few weeks if introductions are handled softly and gradually. Eventually, they may become curious companions or even friends. Always prioritize your cats' health and emotional well-being during the transition. Good luck with Pepper and your feline family!
