MY ACL SURGERY PROGRESS

btw this is just my opinion i would love to hear if you guys have any more suggestions!

i tore my acl moto racing and a small bit of my meniscus. this is truly the hardest thing i’ve been through even tho it hasn’t been to bad. long term im out of sports for a year it’s not worth it.

day 1 wasn’t bad because the nerve block didn’t have much pain

my worst day was day 3, all my pain came flowing in but the next day i was perfectly fine

a week and a half after surgery i was moving and cleaning my room, showering completely, going to concerts, and walking with one crutch

my 2 week post op check up, physical therapy has been going great. i’m almost 3 weeks since surgery and im walking without my crutches now

TIPS!!!!!

TAKE YOUR MEDS! this is very important especially before you go to bed because sleep won’t be easy.

do your exercises when your just sitting or laying down i know this sounds confusing but don’t start jumping into sports just because you feel good. your not ready. and don’t sit around all day so it gets no exercise cut the ends of the steristrips when they start to curl up. DONT PEEL THEM OFF. they will come off on there own get a shower chair or camp chair to put in the shower for the first few days. trust me. you will not want to stand.

get crutch pads!!

... Read moreOkay, so I’ve shared my initial ACL surgery journey, but let's be real – there's so much more to navigating those early days. The time after the nerve block wears off can be a huge mental and physical battle. I remember constantly searching for answers, especially about managing the dreaded swelling and knowing if my pain was "normal." One of the biggest challenges, and what many of you are probably wondering about, is swelling after ACL surgery. Oh. My. Goodness. It feels like your knee is going to explode sometimes! My leg, adorned with that black and yellow knee brace and those initial bandages over the surgical incisions, often felt tight and heavy. For me, swelling was pretty constant for the first couple of weeks, peaking around Day 3-5 alongside the worst pain. My go-to strategy was R.I.C.E. religiously: Rest: Seriously, just rest. Don't push it. Ice: This was my best friend. Whether it was a continuous cold therapy machine or regular ice packs elevated on pillows, I applied it 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, as much as possible. It felt like a constant battle to keep it down. Compression: My brace helped, but elastic bandages (not too tight!) around the knee also provided relief. Elevation: Keep that leg up, above your heart, whenever you can. I basically lived with my leg propped up on pillows, even when sleeping, which wasn't easy! Consistent elevation really helps drain the fluid. Speaking of pain, Day 3 truly was the absolute worst for me. The nerve block had completely worn off, and it felt like my knee was screaming. Beyond just taking my prescribed medication – which is NON-NEGOTIABLE, especially before bed – I found a few other things helped. Timing your meds before the pain gets unbearable is key. Don't wait! Distraction was also huge for me; watching movies or listening to podcasts helped shift my focus. Sometimes gentle heat before exercises seemed to loosen things up, but always check with your PT first. My physical therapy started almost immediately. When I said "do your exercises," I meant it! Even simple quad sets (flexing your thigh muscle) and ankle pumps can make a huge difference in circulation and preventing stiffness. It's not about big, dramatic movements, especially with those surgical incisions still fresh under the bandages. It’s about small, consistent efforts. My PT emphasized getting full knee extension (straightening the leg) right away, which was tough but vital for long-term recovery. Don't skip these, even if they're uncomfortable! Honestly, the mental game is just as hard as the physical one. Admitting I was out of sports for a year felt devastating. There were days I felt completely overwhelmed, stuck on the couch with my leg in the black and yellow knee brace. Finding small victories, like being able to shower properly, or eventually walking with just one crutch, helped immensely. Connecting with others who'd been through it also reminded me I wasn't alone. A few extra practical tips that made my life easier: Showering: Protect those bandages and incisions! I used a waterproof cover over my leg on top of the shower chair. Essential. Sleeping: Try sleeping on your back with your leg elevated, or on your side with a pillow between your knees for support. It won't be perfect, but it helps. Nutrition: Focus on anti-inflammatory foods, protein for healing, and staying super hydrated. It makes a real difference in your body's recovery process. Hang in there! This journey is a marathon, not a sprint, but every small step forward is a victory. You've got this!

A person's bandaged knee with a black leg brace, labeled 'ACL SURGERY and 5 weeks Post-Op,' with a 'WARNING MEDICAL IMAGES' overlay and a sad face emoji.
A medical image comparison showing a 'torn ACL before removal' on the left and a 'grafted ACL' on the right, with text warning about bruising and stitches.
