my ACL surgery and what i wish i knew

i know this isn’t the normal thing you see on this app, but to me this is important to post because i wish i would have seen something like this about a month ago.

August 29th, i had a complete ACL reconstruction. i tore it in a freak accident in the woods, and it really did ruin my dad to day life. i love to run and lift, and almost every hobby i have and friends that i have revolved around those. within one second, i had lost everything i have spent years building. some of my friends don’t even hangout with me anymore since i can’t run with them. as a an avid gym girl, this was just devastating to me. i don’t complain much to anyone in real life, because i don’t want to be the ACL girl. #recovery #aclrecovery

the point is, i was terrified of this surgery. everything i see online is about some athlete who plays contact sports and tore their ACL, not many people fall over a tree in the woods and leave their leg behind under it. i wish i knew how much it would hurt, not physically, but mentally. seeing people do the stuff i used to love to do, and even worse seeing them take it for granted or not maximize their full potential. i felt lonely, depressed, and lost. i still do, and i imagine it’s going to feel that way for a little while. but i know it will get better, as everything always does, and i will make a great recovery and be back to doing what i love.

if you know anyone going through something like this, please take the time to hangout with them and make them feel normal again for a little while. and if you’re going through this yourself, please reach out as i would love to hear your stories!

remember this can happen to anyone at any time, not just people that play contact sports. please take care of your bodies and be safe!#injuryrecovery

... Read moreOkay, let's get real about what your knee actually looks like after ACL surgery, because honestly, no one truly prepares you for the visual changes. When I first saw my leg after surgery, with the heavy bandaging, and then later the stitches and the kaleidoscope of bruising, it was a profound shock. You see clinical images online, but it’s an entirely different experience when it’s your own body under the wraps. Bruising After ACL Surgery: The Rainbow Effect My leg looked like it had gone ten rounds with a champion boxer! Deep purples, blues, greens, and yellows spread from my knee, sometimes all the way down my shin. This extensive bruising is completely normal; it’s a result of the surgical trauma, internal bleeding, and fluids that accumulate. Don't panic if your leg resembles a Jackson Pollock painting! For me, the most intense discoloration began to subside around the 2-3 week mark, but lighter yellow and green hues lingered for a good 4-5 weeks. Keeping my leg elevated above my heart whenever possible, applying ice, and performing the gentle movements recommended by my surgeon really helped to encourage circulation and reduce the intensity. It’s part of the healing process, and while alarming, it usually resolves on its own. ACL Surgery Stitches: More Than Just Scars The sight of stitches can be surprisingly unsettling. I had several sets of them – one for the main incision and others for where they harvested the graft. They were in for about two weeks, and the constant attention to keeping them clean and dry was crucial to prevent infection. My surgeon’s office gave me meticulous instructions for care, which I followed religiously. Honestly, the day they were removed felt like a massive milestone, a tangible step forward in recovery. The scars are permanent, of course, marking the journey I've been on. They're not just physical reminders but badges of resilience. What Does a Knee Look Like 5 Weeks Post-Op? By the 5-week mark, things start to look a bit more "human," but don't expect perfection. My knee was still noticeably swollen, especially after physical therapy sessions or if I spent too much time on my feet. It was more of a persistent, generalized puffiness rather than the acute "SUPER SWOLLEN" look from immediately post-op. The initial, dramatic bruising had mostly faded, leaving behind faint yellow shadows or just slightly discolored skin. I was still religiously wearing my black leg brace, which felt like a second skin and provided essential stability. My leg wasn't "normal" looking yet, but it was definitely "HEALING NICELY," showing clear signs of progress. This period is often a pivot point, as you're likely transitioning to more active physical therapy, focusing on regaining range of motion and initial strength. Seeing the visible improvements, even subtle ones, was incredibly motivating amidst the mental fog. Managing Swelling and Discomfort Swelling is your body's natural response to injury and surgery, but it can be persistent. Beyond elevation and ice, I found compression socks helped manage the fluid build-up, especially during the day. Gentle ankle pumps and quad sets, even when confined to the brace, were vital for lymphatic drainage. The discomfort wasn't always pain, but often a throbbing ache due to the pressure of the swelling, which could be mentally draining. The Mental Impact of Visual Recovery It's easy to get discouraged when you look down and see a knee that doesn't feel or look like your own. I remember feeling a pang of sadness and frustration seeing the muscle atrophy, comparing my current leg to my "one year ago" legs in photos. The visible changes are a constant reminder of the injury, and it can be tough. But I learned to reframe it: every fading bruise, every less-puffy day, every new stitch scar was a testament to my body's incredible ability to heal and my own perseverance. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and every visual step forward is a victory. Remember, every body heals differently, and these physical signs are simply part of your unique and challenging journey back to strength.
