My horror story of a 6 week postpartum check up with my first daughter: a view inside the priorities of our healthcare system for new mothers. (Story from 2019)
Going through my 6-week postpartum checkup was an eye-opening and frankly frustrating experience that made me question how well our healthcare system supports new mothers. Beyond just the usual physical examinations, I noticed that the emotional and mental health aspects were just brushed aside, as if the only priority was ticking boxes during the appointment. One thing that struck me was how concerns around a lowered libido and changes in mental health were barely acknowledged. New mothers are often told the importance of body recovery but rarely are they encouraged to openly discuss topics like sexual health or mental well-being without feeling judged or dismissed. It’s almost as if the system assumes that after childbirth, women should just adapt quietly. The whole experience felt like being rushed through to another appointment, ignoring the toll that taking care of a newborn exerts mentally and physically. There’s an analogy I heard which compares postpartum women to being in the outback, left to fend for themselves without adequate support — that’s sadly true. The mental load of constantly worrying about baby care, managing appointments, and sometimes even dealing with a lack of babysitters can be overwhelming. What’s really needed is a shift in healthcare priorities to treat postpartum checkups as comprehensive evaluations that include mental health screenings and validate the emotional struggles mothers face. It’s not just about physical healing but ensuring new mothers feel supported in all aspects of their wellbeing. I hope my story encourages others to speak up about their postpartum experiences and pushes healthcare providers to evolve their approach, recognizing that producing a healthy baby is not the only duty — taking care of the mother’s overall health should be equally important.
