What Kind of Fungus!?!

7/22 Edited to

... Read moreIf you've noticed fungus growing on your woodchips, it might look a bit unsettling at first, but it’s actually a positive sign for your garden. Fungi play a vital role in breaking down organic materials like woodchips into rich, nutritious compost that improves soil structure and fertility. When you see white or other colored fungal growths on mulch, it means the decomposition process is actively happening, returning valuable nutrients to the soil. From my experience, allowing this natural fungal activity to continue benefits not only the mulch but also your plants. The fungi help retain moisture in the soil, reduce the need for chemical fertilizers, and create a thriving environment for beneficial microorganisms. You don’t need to remove the fungus unless it’s clearly harmful to your plants; in fact, encouraging it can enhance your garden’s health. To support this natural process, keep your mulch layer thick enough (around two to three inches) and maintain proper moisture. Avoid overly dry or waterlogged conditions, which can disrupt fungal growth. Over time, you’ll notice healthier plants and improved soil texture. Remember, not all fungi are the same; some are decomposers like those found on woodchips, while others might cause plant diseases. If you’re ever unsure about the type of fungus you’re seeing, consult local gardening resources or extension services for identification and advice. Embracing fungus in your mulch can be a game-changer for sustainable gardening and homesteading practices.
