Skin Cancer Detection

Doing self-checks is SO important. It’s highly advisable to see a dermatologist once per year for a skin check but in between, you should regularly do self-checks. Follow this guide to know what to look for and if anything looks suspicious, schedule an appointment to have it looked at.

If you shop with ZAMARA, not only do they provide safe, natural skin care & self tanning products, they also donate a portion of profits to help advanced stage skin cancer patients and provide free or reduced cost skin checks to underserved communities. Be sure to check them out!

... Read moreAs someone who's become really passionate about skin health, I can't stress enough how crucial self-checks are. It's not just about getting tan; it's about protecting yourself from something serious. I used to think skin cancer was only for older people or those who never used sunscreen, but learning about the ABCDEs changed my perspective entirely. It gave me a clear roadmap for what to look for on my own skin. Let's dive into the 'ABCDEs of Skin Cancer' – this guide is genuinely life-saving. I remember feeling overwhelmed at first, but once you break it down, it's quite simple and empowering. A is for Asymmetry: Have you ever looked at a mole and thought, "Hmm, one side looks different from the other?" That's asymmetry. A healthy, benign mole is usually symmetrical. If you draw an imaginary line through the middle, both halves should match. If one half doesn't match the other, it's a red flag and definitely worth showing to a dermatologist. I had a mole that started looking a bit lopsided, and it was the first thing my doctor checked for. B is for Border: This one is all about the edges of your mole. Normal moles tend to have smooth, well-defined borders. But if you notice uneven, jagged, or blurred edges, that's a sign to pay attention. Think of it like a smudged outline rather than a crisp one. A friend of mine noticed a mole with really irregular, almost 'scalloped' edges, and that was her first warning. C is for Color: This is where it gets interesting because different shades can be a concern. While benign moles are usually a single shade of brown, a suspicious mole might have multiple colors – brown, black, red, white, or even blue. It's not just about how dark it is, but the variation in color within the same mole. I check for any new splotches or changes in pigment. D is for Diameter: Generally, if a mole is larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser), it warrants a closer look. Of course, size isn't the only factor, but it's a good general guideline. I keep a mental note of any moles that seem to be growing or are already quite large. It's a simple measurement that can make a big difference. E is for Evolving: This is perhaps the most critical 'E'. 'Evolving' means any change in the mole – whether it's growing in size, changing shape, color, or even if it starts to itch, bleed, or become tender. I had an "itchy mole" once, and it freaked me out! While an itchy mole doesn't automatically mean cancer, it's definitely a symptom to take seriously, especially if it's new or persistent, or accompanied by other ABCDE changes. Any mole that is evolving or behaving differently than the rest of your moles needs professional evaluation. Don't hesitate to get it checked, because early detection truly saves lives. Regular self-checks help you notice these subtle changes before they become more serious.

A dermatologist points to a graphic illustrating the ABCDE rule for melanoma detection, showing examples of moles for Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, and Evolving, with the title "5 letters could save your life. Know the warning signs of melanoma."
This image explains "Asymmetry" in moles, showing a round, regular mole versus an irregular mole where one half doesn't match the other, indicating a warning sign.
This image explains "Border" in moles, contrasting a regular mole with smooth, defined edges against irregular moles with ragged, notched, or blurred borders, which are warning signs.
If you think all moles are harmless, you might be missing early signs of melanoma not because it’s obvious, but because it often isn’t. Melanoma can start as subtle changes in shape, color, or size. That’s why dermatologists use the ABCDE rule to spot warning signs early. What many don’t real
