Rail Road Spikes
Railroad spikes have a rich symbolic and magical history, especially in North American folk magic traditions like Hoodoo and some branches of witchcraft. Here’s a breakdown of how they’re commonly used and what they represent:
Symbolism & Meaning
• Protection: Railroad spikes are often used for protection, especially when driven into the four corners of a property to ward off evil or unwanted spirits.
• Binding: The iron in the spike is believed to have grounding and binding qualities. They’re sometimes used to “nail down” a situation or person—metaphorically fixing them in place.
• Iron Magic: Iron has long been considered a powerful material in folk magic, believed to repel fae, spirits, and malevolent energies.
• Authority & Power: Because spikes are used to hold down massive steel tracks, they’re also seen as symbols of control and force—good for spells related to domination or strength.
Common Uses
• Property Protection: Burying spikes in the four corners of your land to “nail it down” spiritually.
• Warding Spells: Hanging a railroad spike above a doorway or window for home protection.
• Hexing or Binding: In more aggressive magic, spikes may be used to “nail” a target in place, often alongside a name or personal concern.
• Altar Tools: Used as a wand or as a symbolic item on altars related to war deities, ancestors, or spirits of the land.
Ethical Considerations
Many witches and practitioners believe in only collecting railroad spikes that are legally obtained—either purchased, found (after ensuring they’re not active-use or stolen), or gifted. Removing spikes from functioning tracks is illegal and dangerous.
When I lived in Florida, I implemented using railroad spikes for the place I was renting. When I bought my home in South Carolina, I did the same thing. You can also add railroad spikes inside the home if you don’t live in a house and put it on the four corners of the residence.
Poll: should my next video be about the actual ritual on how to cleanse them? Comment below. ⬇️
