Last post was about the history of railroad spikes, this post talks about what to do once you have them. Simple but yet effective way to cleanse railroad spikes before putting them on your property or around your home. Please note: do not take railroad spikes from active railroads, can lead to a felony charge ad/or high citation.
Once you have the railroad spikes, place them in an aluminum pan.
Use anointing oil or olive oil if you don’t have anointing oil then add casarilla powder onto each of them. Once soaked, one by one spray Florida Water and you can something like “protect my home”, “protect my property from unwanted people who don’t have the best interest”.
After soaking them light the railroads spikes in the pan. This will burn off any unwanted energy from it. Once it’s cooled down to the touch begin wrapping them on twine. I added a protection sigil to the top of the nail. Once completely wrapped with no spaces showing the spike, wrap in tape to keep the twine from unraveling.
Go onto the 4 corners of your property with a hammer and nail them down. If you live in a condo or apartment, place spikes on the 4 corners of the apartment.
... Read moreHey everyone! Building on my last post about the history of railroad spikes and the basics of cleansing them for home protection, I wanted to dive a little deeper into some questions I often get. It's fascinating how a simple object like a railroad spike can hold so much spiritual significance!
First off, let's talk about where to find railroad spikes legally and ethically. The original post rightly warned against taking them from active railroads – that’s a big no-no! So, where can you get your hands on these powerful tools? I've had luck at antique shops and flea markets; often, you’ll find old, retired spikes there. Online craft suppliers or even specialized metal art stores sometimes carry them. Another great option is reclamation yards or salvage operations that deal with old railway materials. Always ask if they're disused and legally obtained. It’s important to start your protection ritual with good, clear energy, and knowing your spikes were acquired responsibly is a big part of that.
Why railroad spikes, specifically? What's the symbolism? In many folk magic traditions, including Hoodoo, railroad spikes are seen as powerful tools for grounding, protection, and setting boundaries. They represent strength, stability, and the ability to hold things in place. Think about it: they hold tracks together, guiding and confining movement. Spiritually, they're believed to 'nail down' protection, preventing negative energies or unwelcome influences from crossing into your space. They also connect to the earth, anchoring your intentions firmly.
Now, let's elaborate a bit on those key cleansing ingredients we discussed. The images showed some of these, so let's explore their roles. Anointing oil (or olive oil as an accessible alternative) is typically used to bless and consecrate items, infusing them with your intention – in this case, protection. It helps to prepare the spike as a vessel for spiritual work. Casarilla powder is often used in Hoodoo for spiritual cleansing, protection, and warding off evil. It's made from eggshells and is incredibly potent for banishing negativity. And then there's Florida Water, a classic spiritual cologne and cleansing agent. It’s used to purify, bless, and invite good spirits, creating a clearer, more vibrant energy around the spike. When you spray it, visualize its purifying mist washing away anything that doesn't serve your protective purpose. The twine and green tape (as seen in the preparation image) are crucial too. The twine binds your intention to the spike, while the green tape seals it, symbolizing growth, renewal, and security for your protective spell. Using an aluminum pan during the burning process helps contain everything safely.
Beyond just the four corners: While placing them at the four corners of your property is powerful, let's consider some nuances. If you can't nail them down with a hammer (especially in an apartment or condo), simply burying them shallowly in planters at each corner, or placing them discreetly in corners inside your home, works just as well. The intention is key. I also recommend visualizing a strong, protective energy grid forming between the spikes once they're in place, creating an unbreakable shield around your home.
Finally, how often do you need to recharge or re-cleanse your protective spikes? This really depends on your intuition and the energy of your space. Some people re-cleanse annually, during a specific moon phase, or whenever they feel a shift in their home's energy. If you experience a period of high stress, conflict, or perceive increased negativity, it might be a good time to revisit your spikes. You don't necessarily need to remove them; you can symbolically re-anoint them with oil or spray them with Florida Water while reaffirming your protective intentions. If a spike ever gets disturbed or moved, just recenter it and repeat your intention. Trust your gut – it will tell you when your protective shield needs a little boost!
