Coconut Oil Pulling Explained
Coconut oil pulling is a traditional oral health practice that involves swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for about 10–20 minutes, then spitting it out. It’s believed to help remove bacteria, reduce plaque, and promote healthier gums and teeth.
Potential Benefits:
• Reduces harmful bacteria: Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which has antimicrobial properties.
• Improves oral hygiene: May reduce plaque and gingivitis.
• Fresher breath: Can help eliminate bad breath.
• Whiter teeth: Some people report mild teeth whitening over time.
How to Do It:
1. Take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (preferably cold-pressed, organic).
2. Swish it gently around your mouth for 10–20 minutes (don’t gargle or swallow).
3. Spit it into a trash can (not the sink, to avoid clogging pipes).
4. Rinse your mouth with warm water and brush your teeth.
Considerations:
• Not a substitute for brushing and flossing.
• Should be part of a broader oral hygiene routine.
• Not FDA-approved as a treatment for dental issues, but widely used in Ayurvedic practices.
Morning Routine with Coconut Oil Pulling
1. Oil Pulling (Before Eating or Drinking)
• Take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.
• Swish gently in your mouth for 10–20 minutes.
• Do this while doing something else (shower, getting dressed).
• Spit into the trash (not the sink), rinse with warm water.
2. Brush Your Teeth
• Use a fluoride toothpaste.
• Brush for 2 minutes.
• Consider a tongue scraper for extra cleanliness.
3. Floss
• Floss gently between all teeth to remove any residue or buildup.
4. Mouthwash (Optional)
• Use a non-alcoholic, antibacterial mouthwash if desired.
5. Stay Hydrated
• Drink a glass of water to keep your mouth and body hydrated.
Optional Evening Routine
• Brush and floss again before bed.
• Skip oil pulling in the evening unless desired—once a day is typically enough.
(*My experience- I tried oil pulling with coconut oil. I noticed the difference with the first use!! My top gums turned from brown to slightly pink. Gonna continue doing this for the next few days.)
