Clear the Path: Uncrossing Candle Magick
I am very big, BIG when it comes to candle work and if you believe that you either been jinxed, hexed or cursed (theres a difference between the 3 by the way), first step is to do an uncrossing candle.
AS A REMINDER: This candle if doing this in your house, house must been clean before attempting this. Pictures above are some of my work in the past of uncrossing. Some candles come with a prayer on the back of the candle, some will allow to write the persons/peoples names.
Once that’s done, add three holes inside the candle (not too close to the wick) so you can add oils and herbs. Then light it with matches and never a lighter. Study how the flame reacts for the next few minutes and throughout the course of the candle.
Info:
An Uncrossing candle is a type of ritual or spell candle used in folk magic, particularly Hoodoo, rootwork, and other Afro-Caribbean or American folk traditions, to remove negative influences—also known as “crossed conditions.” It’s often used in spiritual cleansing, protection, and breaking hexes, curses, or jinxes.
🕯️ What Is an Uncrossing Candle?
• Purpose: To remove spiritual blockages, bad luck, hexes, or negativity—whether caused by others or through spiritual imbalance.
• Color: Typically black (to absorb/banish negativity) or white (for purification). Some versions are double-action candles (half black, half white).
• Additions: Often dressed with uncrossing oil, herbs like hyssop, rue, or rosemary, and inscribed with symbols or names.
📜 History and Origins
1. Hoodoo and Rootwork
• Rooted in African Traditional Religions brought to the Americas via the transatlantic slave trade.
• Combined with Indigenous American practices and European folk magic.
• “Crossed” conditions (bad luck, hexes, spiritual blockages) were believed to be caused by malevolent forces or magical workings—either from others or self-inflicted.
2. Christian Influence
• Psalms, especially Psalm 37 and Psalm 51, are often recited during uncrossing rituals.
• The blending of Bible verses with candle magic is a hallmark of Hoodoo practice.
3. Evolution
• In the 20th century, as Hoodoo and folk magic spread into popular occult circles, uncrossing candles became commercially available.
• Shops like Lucky Mojo and original botanicas helped standardize and popularize their use.
🔮 Common Ritual Elements
• Carving the candle: Inscribing your name, targets, or specific intentions.
• Dressing it: Anointing with oils and herbs.
• Burning: Over a set number of days (typically 7), often while reciting specific prayers or affirmations.
• Disposal: Candle remains are often disposed of ritually (e.g., at a crossroads, running water, or buried).
