Gardening w/ Bri: What is Herbalism?
As I mentioned in my 4k followers post, I am going to incorporate more of the gardening aspect to my page.
My gardening during the Pandemic led me into a world of Herbalism. I didn’t know the name at the time, I had nobody to guide me or show me what it was. I just had to do tons of research to find the name of what it was and find my community. But before we delve into everything about gardening, let me ask a simple question, what is herbalism?
Herbalism is the practice of using plants, roots, flowers, and natural botanicals for healing, wellness, and spiritual purposes. It’s one of the oldest healing traditions in the world and appears in cultures across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe.
🌿 What Herbalism Involves:
• Identifying medicinal plants
• Preparing remedies such as teas, tinctures, salves, oils, powders, and poultices
• Using plants to support the body, immune support, digestion, relaxation, skin health, etc.
• Understanding energetic properties like warming, cooling, moistening, or drying (common in folk and traditional systems)
• Sometimes includes spiritual or ritual uses in certain traditions (like Hoodoo, Ayurveda, or Traditional Chinese Medicine)
🌱 Types of Herbalism:
• Folk herbalism – Passed down through families and communities; common in many African American, Gullah Geechee, and Southern traditions.
• Clinical herbalism – More formal training, focuses on anatomy, physiology, and herb–drug interactions.
• Traditional systems –
• Ayurveda (India)
• Traditional Chinese Medicine
• Indigenous American plant medicine
• African and African diaspora herbal traditions
🌼 What Herbalism Is Not:
• It’s not the same as modern pharmaceuticals (though many drugs originate from plants).
• It’s usually not meant to replace medical care, instead, many people use herbs to support general wellness.
✨ Why People Use Herbalism
• Desire for natural remedies
• Cultural or ancestral traditions
• Holistic healing approach
• Support for everyday wellness (sleep, stress, digestion, skin, immunity, etc.)
