Spirituality Around the World 🌎: Amungme People
The Amungme (sometimes written Amung, Amungme, or Amungme-people) are an Indigenous ethnic group native to the Central Highlands of Papua, especially around the Tembagapura and Mount Jayawijaya regions. They are one of the original landholding peoples connected to the sacred mountains in Papua, Indonesia.
Amungme People & Spirituality:
For the Amungme people of Papua, Indonesia, spirituality is not separate from daily life , it is woven into the land, the body, and the ancestors. Their belief system is deeply earth-centered, ancestral, and relational.
Sacred Relationship With the Land:
The Amungme believe the earth is a living being. Mountains, rivers, forests, and stones possess spirit and memory.
• Mountains are considered the mother’s body
• The land is ancestral flesh, harming it is harming the people
• Sacred peaks (especially around Mount Jayawijaya / Nemangkawi) are seen as the dwelling place of ancestral spirits
This belief makes land stewardship a spiritual duty, not just survival.
Ancestors & Spirit World:
Ancestors remain present and active in the lives of the living.
• Ancestors guide through dreams, signs, and visions
• Spirits protect clans, land, and families
• Rituals maintain balance between the physical and spiritual worlds
Dreams are treated as sacred communication, not imagination.
Balance & Harmony:
Amungme spirituality emphasizes balance:
• Between humans and nature
• Between living people and ancestors
• Between physical needs and spiritual responsibilities
Rituals & Ceremonies:
Spiritual rituals may include:
• Chanting and ancestral songs
• Drumming and rhythmic movement
• Offerings of food or symbolic items
• Communal ceremonies tied to harvest, birth, death, or land protection
Rituals are usually led by elders or spiritual custodians of the clan.
Illness, conflict, or misfortune is often seen as a sign of spiritual imbalance.
Sacred Knowledge & Transmission:
Spiritual knowledge is passed orally:
• Through stories, myths, and teachings
• Through participation, not books
• Elders guide the youth in understanding sacred responsibilities
Silence, listening, and observation are considered spiritual practices.
Modern Spiritual Struggles:
Modern pressures= especially mining and land disruption are experienced not only as political or economic violence, but as spiritual trauma.
For the Amungme:
• Environmental destruction = ancestral disturbance
• Loss of land = loss of spiritual identity
• Healing requires land restoration, remembrance, and ritual
