... Read moreFinding dog toys that can withstand the mighty jaws of an aggressive chewer, especially a large breed like an English Mastiff or an American Bully, feels like an Olympic sport sometimes! I totally get the struggle of bringing home a new toy only to find it in pieces within minutes. It's frustrating and can get expensive! When I head to Petsmart specifically for my super chewers, I look for a few key things to ensure I'm getting the most bang for my buck and, more importantly, a toy that lasts. First off, material matters. I always gravitate towards toys made from heavy-duty, solid rubber or tough nylon. Brands that feature lines like "JOYHOUND TOUGH" really catch my eye because their marketing often lives up to the promise of being "OUR TOUGHEST TOY YET!" These materials are designed to resist punctures and tearing, unlike softer plastics or plush toys which are instantly annihilated. Another thing I pay close attention to is the toy's construction. Aggressive chewers need toys that are solid throughout, without small pieces that can be easily gnawed off and potentially swallowed. Look for seamless designs or toys with very few seams. For instance, some of the best picks at Petsmart are often things like solid rubber kongs, Nylabones designed for extreme chewers, or those hard-wearing, textured rubber balls. They offer a good weight and density that makes them satisfying to chew but incredibly difficult to destroy. I also consider the shape and size. For my big dogs, smaller toys are not just a choking hazard but also easier to demolish. I opt for oversized toys that they can really sink their teeth into without breaking them down too quickly. Sometimes, even the simplest designs, like a solid ring or a large bone shape, are the most effective because there are no weak points for them to exploit. Beyond just the material and construction, think about how the toy can provide mental stimulation. Even for aggressive chewers, a toy that offers a challenge can extend its lifespan. Puzzle toys, especially those made from hard rubber that can dispense treats, are fantastic. They keep my dogs engaged and focused on getting the reward, rather than just mindlessly destroying the toy. While they might still chew them, the added mental effort often means they last longer than a simple fetch toy. Finally, always supervise your aggressive chewer with new toys, especially when you're testing out a new brand or type. Even the toughest toys can eventually show wear and tear, and it’s important to replace them once they become damaged to prevent any ingestion of broken pieces. Rotating toys can also help them last longer – out of sight, out of mind! This simple strategy keeps the toys feeling 'new' and reduces the constant assault on a single favorite. Shopping smart at Petsmart for these specific features has saved me so much money and kept my powerful pups happy and entertained.
