This journey… whew.

I started my associates degree in Human Services right before COVID. I graduated as I was finishing cancer treatments. I started my BSW 2 weeks after my last round of radiation. I my job halfway through and was just about homeless until I swallowed my pride and asked for help. We moved to a new city where my university was and where my son could get therapeutic services he needed. We’ve been in our apartment for just over a year, I graduate with my bachelor’s in May and I’m start my masters degree in June.

I am so thankful to be where I am right now and for the found family that’s held our hands when I didn’t know how to move forward. #gratitude #futuresocialworker #dontgiveup

Many students face challenges such as balancing health issues, financial stress, and family responsibilities. In my case, starting my associates degree in Human Services coincided with my cancer treatments. This experience made me realize the importance of building a support network, which includes friends, family, and professional mentors. Furthermore, relocating to a new city was crucial not only for my educational pursuits but also for my son’s well-being, ensuring he received vital therapeutic services. This transition has enriched my life immensely, reinforcing the idea that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. As I approach graduation with my bachelor’s degree and prepare to begin my master's in Social Work, I reflect on the resilience that education fosters. Every challenge faced is a testament to my determination and the dedication of those around me. In a world where mental health is often overlooked, pursuing a career in Social Work allows me to give back to the community and support others facing similar hardships. I hope to inspire fellow students and anyone experiencing difficulties to persevere and reach out for help when needed. The road to success may be tough, but with passion and perseverance, it becomes manageable.
