Alerting (Part 1)

It’s truly incredible to witness your service dog in action, especially when they perform a life-saving alert. People often ask me, 'What does an alert even look like?' and it's not always what you might expect. For my medical alert Malinois, the process of alerting can be a whole range of signals, each finely tuned over countless hours of practice and bonding. Sometimes, it starts subtly. A gentle nudge with his nose, or a soft paw on my leg, might be his first attempt to get my attention. He'll often do a quick sniff check first, confirming what he's detecting. If I’m distracted or don’t immediately register the signal, he'll escalate. I've learned to pay close attention to these early signs, but sometimes, life just gets in the way! That’s when his persistence really shines through. If those initial nudges don't work, he might start to paw at me more insistently. As the OCR mentions, sometimes "This is his last resort if 1 paw doesn't work," meaning he's tried other things. He might even begin to vocalize. Yes, sometimes "HE'S YELLING" at me! It's not aggressive, but a clear, urgent communication, specifically trained to grab my full attention. I've heard him "yell" things that sound like "Sit down mom" in his dog language, urging me to take a necessary action. It’s hard to ignore a determined Malinois when they know something is crucial! There have been times when I was busy, maybe just wanting a drink of soda, and I felt a paw, then heard a low growl or whine. My first thought might be "Wondering why I'm not listening," but then I realize he's serious. It’s a constant reminder of how vital his work is. These alerts can be for various medical conditions, from changes in blood sugar to impending anxiety attacks or even heart rate fluctuations. Each alert is a testament to his dedication and specialized training. We work on these alerts constantly, building on his natural instincts and refining them into reliable signals. It's not just about teaching a command, but about fostering a deep partnership where he understands my body's subtle changes and I, in turn, learn to interpret his unique language. Public access can sometimes be challenging; people are naturally curious or sometimes intrusive, like the person "taking pictur walking around us." It’s important to remember that while he might be incredibly cute, he’s working. Ensuring he’s visible and safe from being "stepped on" is also a priority, which is why I love making his gear sparkly and noticeable! The bond you build with a medical alert service dog is truly unique. They become your shadow, your early warning system, and an unwavering source of support. Every alert, whether it's a soft nudge or a firm bark, is a moment of trust and an affirmation of the incredible impact these dogs have on our lives.
