I met Coretta Scott King!

What a special thrill to meet MLK Jr's wife while I was on tour years ago.

... Read moreI still can’t believe it when I think back to that moment years ago on tour. Meeting Coretta Scott King was truly a highlight, a moment etched in my memory forever. You hear about these incredible figures in history, and then you're standing in front of one, someone who not only stood beside a giant but was a giant in her own right. It wasn't just a fleeting handshake; it was an encounter that left a profound impression on me, stirring a deeper appreciation for her immense contributions to civil rights and peace. What struck me most, even in that brief interaction, was her extraordinary grace and composure. She carried herself with such dignity, a quiet strength that emanated from her. You could sense the resilience she must have cultivated throughout her life, especially after Dr. King's passing. Learning about her dedication to the movement, her tireless advocacy for social justice, and her unwavering commitment to non-violence, it makes you wonder about the character traits that forge such an incredible spirit. She wasn't simply 'MLK Jr's wife'; she was a formidable leader, an activist, and an artist in her own right. Her courage to continue fighting for equality, even when facing unimaginable grief, is something I find incredibly inspiring. It’s a testament to her inner fortitude and a powerful King Jr memory that she kept his dream alive. Reflecting on her life, it makes me think about where such strength comes from. While I didn't get to know her parents, Bernice McMurry Scott and Obadiah Scott, personally, knowing her background as someone who grew up in rural Alabama during the deeply segregated South gives context to her unwavering spirit. She came from a family that instilled strong values and a belief in education and justice, even amidst hardship. This foundation, I believe, played a crucial role in shaping the remarkable woman she became—a woman who dared to dream of a more just world and actively worked to make it a reality. Her legacy extends far beyond her husband's. Coretta Scott King was a global ambassador for peace and justice for decades, establishing The King Center and continuing to advocate for human rights worldwide. Her children, like Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King, and Bernice Albertine King, have bravely carried on the family's mission, ensuring that the lessons of the Civil Rights Movement continue to resonate. While I haven't delved deeply into the lives of all her family members, seeing how her spirit lives on through them, and through institutions like The King Center, truly shows the enduring power of her vision. It's a reminder that the fight for justice is a generational endeavor, and her influence is still deeply felt today. That encounter, however brief, truly solidified my admiration for her, not just as a historical figure, but as an extraordinary human being who dedicated her life to making the world a better place.
