Show REVIEW: Dead Of Summer (2016)

In 1989, school is out for the summer. When Camp Stillwater's dark, ancient mythology awakens, what was supposed to be a summer of fun soon turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn.

I really enjoyed this show! There’s great friendships and relationships and a bit of a romance element. It had characters that were flawed, but had strong character development that you ended up rooting for. It also had a wide variety of characters from all walks of life, so it had good representation. The cast was wonderful, and Zelda Williams (Robin Williams’ daughter) was in it along with other familiar faces. There’s twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end! Once I finished watching the series, I was still thinking about it.

... Read moreAfter binging 'Dead of Summer,' I just can't stop thinking about it! This show really grabbed me from the start with its chilling premise at Camp Stillwater. Set in the nostalgic summer of 1989, it perfectly captures that classic slasher-movie vibe but with a deeper, more intricate mythology. What started as just a summer job for these counselors quickly unravels into a terrifying fight for survival against an ancient evil lurking in the woods. The mystery element is so strong – you're constantly trying to piece together what's happening, making every episode a suspenseful ride. One of the biggest highlights for me was definitely the cast. The original article already mentioned Zelda Williams, who is fantastic, but the entire ensemble brings so much to their roles. You've got Mark Indelicato (from 'Ugly Betty') bringing heart and humor, Elizabeth Lail (known from 'You') with a compelling backstory, and Elizabeth Mitchell (from 'Lost') as the enigmatic camp owner. Their performances really elevate the material, making you care about each character's fate. The show truly shines in its character development; these aren't just your typical horror movie archetypes. They're flawed, relatable teenagers and young adults dealing with personal demons alongside supernatural ones, and honestly, I rooted for almost all of them! I also really appreciated the thought put into representation within the show. It features a diverse group of characters, reflecting different backgrounds and experiences, which made the story feel even more authentic and modern, despite its 80s setting. This isn't just about jump scares – though there are plenty of genuinely scary moments that will make you gasp! It's also about friendships, first loves, and uncovering dark secrets, all wrapped up in a thrilling package. For those wondering about its availability, 'Dead of Summer' originally aired on Freeform. While many shows eventually land on big streamers, it's important to note that it's currently not streaming on Netflix. But don't worry, you can still easily dive into the Camp Stillwater mystery! As mentioned, it's available to purchase on platforms like iTunes and Amazon Prime Video. Trust me, for the twists, the scares, and the unforgettable characters, the small investment is totally worth it. If you're looking for a gripping horror series with a lot of heart and a mystery that will keep you guessing long after the finale, then this 5/5 gem is absolutely one to add to your watch list!
