The curse of Robert (review)

Title : the curse of Robert

Rating: ⭐️Overall rating: 7/10

Director: Andrew Jones

Genre: Supernatural/ Horror

Year of release: 2016

Where to watch: Tubi, YouTube, Plex, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube Tv, google play movies & tv, fandango at home.

Synopsis: Emily, a student desperate for money, works the night shift as a cleaner at a local museum. However, her life turns upside down when she experiences unexplainable paranormal phenomena every night.

Final thoughts: the second installment of the Robert the doll franchise I actually liked this one a lot more than the first one I did like that they made more use of Robert throughout the film and we get to revisit some characters from the original as well. the ending definitely wasn’t what I was expecting though I’m not mad at it. What did you guys think of this one and what’s your favorite horror movie?

... Read moreAs a huge horror fan who's always on the lookout for a good scare, especially when it comes to creepy dolls, 'The Curse of Robert' really caught my eye. After reading my initial quick review, you might be curious to dive a little deeper into what makes this particular haunted doll film stand out, especially since it's a sequel! I mean, who doesn't love a good spooky story centered around a malevolent toy? One thing that instantly grabbed me about this sequel, as mentioned in my initial thoughts, was how much more screen time Robert himself got. You know that iconic image often seen on the movie poster – the one with the eerie, red-haired creepy doll peeking over the back of a wooden chair? That visual perfectly encapsulates the unsettling presence he has throughout the film. Unlike some haunted doll movies where the doll feels more like a background prop, The Curse of Robert truly makes him a central, terrifying figure. It’s not just about the doll causing chaos; it’s about him causing chaos, which I found far more engaging. It's fascinating to me how the legend of the original Robert the Doll, which this film series is loosely based on, adds an extra layer of chill. Knowing there's a real-life haunted doll story out there just makes the on-screen antics even more unnerving. I've always been intrigued by these real-life paranormal accounts, and seeing how artists interpret them in film is always a treat. Have you ever looked up the actual Robert the Doll? The stories are wild, and often, reading about the real legend can make the movie feel even scarier, connecting you to that deeper folklore. If you're like me and have seen countless haunted doll films, you might wonder how 'The Curse of Robert' stacks up against the likes of Annabelle or Chucky. While it might not have the big-budget polish of those bigger franchises, it makes up for it with its sheer commitment to an unsettling atmosphere and, of course, giving us plenty of that eerie doll. I personally found its low-budget charm quite effective – it feels more grounded, almost like a found-footage vibe at times, which can really enhance the scares. It’s a different kind of horror, one that relies on slow-burn tension and sudden jolts rather than elaborate special effects. I also loved getting to revisit some characters and seeing how the story evolved from the first installment. The setting, a museum night shift, was brilliant for building suspense. Imagine being alone in a dimly lit building, surrounded by ancient artifacts, and then discovering a malevolent presence. The film did a good job of playing on those classic horror tropes, making Emily's struggle feel very real and isolating. It’s that feeling of being trapped and vulnerable that truly elevates the scares in this movie. And that ending! Without giving too much away, it definitely left me thinking. It wasn't the typical horror movie wrap-up, and I always appreciate when a film dares to do something different and leave you with questions rather than neat answers. It opened up a lot of discussion points for me, and I'd love to hear what others thought if they've seen it. What makes a good horror ending for you? For anyone planning a spooky movie night, especially if you're checking out 'The Curse of Robert' on platforms like Tubi or Hulu, I'd highly recommend watching it late at night with the lights off. Get yourself in the mood for some classic, creepy doll scares. It’s perfect for those evenings when you want a solid, jumpy horror flick that doesn't take itself too seriously but still delivers on the chills. It’s a great pick for a casual horror watch with friends or for a solo night of frights. What are your favorite low-budget horror gems that surprised you?
