THREE SONGWRITING RED FLAGS THAT SOMEONE SHOULD'VE PUT ON A MF BILLBOARD!!!! 🚩🚩🚩
and by red flag i just mean like 3 ways you're telling yourself you're a terrible songwriter...because we've all been there (and some of us are actually still there - HELP IM STILL AT THE RESTAURANT!!!)
1️⃣ YOU'RE EDITING AS YOU WRITE 1️⃣
can we all agree to stop fucking doing this?? when i'm writing lyrics i need to feel free to explore and experiment and maybe sound like trash but at least be REAL in the moment. i need to just let that be good enough. relate yet?
2️⃣ YOU CAN'T COMMIT TO A CHORUS OR MELODY 2️⃣
this just also happens to be because you probably think nothing you write is good enough. but it is!!! i find myself second guessing my melodies and choruses all the time but i usually always end up coming back to that FIRST ONE i wrote and then i'm like smh 🤦🏼♀️
3️⃣ YOU THINK GOOD=COMPLEX 3️⃣
wrong. some of the best choruses and lyrics are actually so fucking simple. i love writing a song with a good complex motif but that doesn't mean that every song has to have that in order to be a good song. stop hating on yourself, guys...
let me be the first (or second or third or whatever) to tell you that you deserve better than your inner critic. so tell that b to shut up and just write that song. art is art.
