Power Without Love is Scary
When we think of God’s power and authority over all things, we need to make sure that we also remember His incomprehensible love for us. Because absolute power without absolute love is a terrifying concept. But thank God, He loves us beyond measure, so we can fully rely on and depend on Him and surrender our will to His, knowing that He will bring about what’s best for us, out of love.
They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region. (Mark 5:1–17)

Reflecting on the passage from Mark 5:1–17, it’s clear that the concept of power without love indeed evokes fear, while power coupled with love brings healing and restoration. In my own faith journey, I’ve encountered moments where I struggled to understand how God’s sovereign power could be both all-encompassing and gentle. This story helps me see that God’s authority is exercised out of compassion and care rather than mere control. The story of the man possessed by a legion of demons shows a dramatic display of power—but more importantly, it reveals Jesus’ love and willingness to intervene in broken lives. The man’s bondage and suffering were severe, yet Jesus did not respond with judgment or violence, but with a command that freed the man completely. This reminds us that God’s power is not oppressive but redemptive. One vital lesson I have learned is that when power is exercised without love, it can lead to oppression and fear. This is evident in many human interactions where authority is misused. However, God’s power is perfectly balanced by His infinite love—making it trustworthy and life-giving. As believers, this truth encourages us to surrender our fears and place our confidence in God’s will, knowing it originates from unconditional love. Additionally, the reactions of the townspeople in the passage also teach an important lesson about human fear of change and the unknown when divine power acts. While the man was healed, the community’s request for Jesus to leave their region showed discomfort with the disruption of the status quo. It reminds me that embracing God’s transformative power often requires courage and faith in His loving plan. In daily life, reflecting on this balance between power and love helps me navigate difficult situations—reminding me to act with compassion and humility when I have influence over others. It also challenges me to trust more deeply that God’s sovereign power is ultimately for our good, rooted deeply in His infinite love for us all.
