Who are you surrendering to?
Unconsciously or consciously, we are all in a constant state of surrender. The default of the flesh is living in bondage to sin, so the choice, whether we think we are making one or not, is a binary one: stay in a state of surrender to Satan, which can also be an unconscious decision made by wandering aimlessly through life, or surrender our lives and our wills, and our hearts to Jesus Christ. The difference is, living as slaves to sin leads to destruction, death, and ultimate separation from God. Living in a state of surrender as slaves to Christ leads to purpose and everlasting life with God, as we were originally created to live.
Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? (Romans 6:16)
Reflecting on the daily choices we make, I’ve come to realize how often surrender happens without conscious thought. Life constantly presents a crossroads: surrendering to destructive habits or to a higher, purposeful calling. Personally, embracing surrender to Christ transformed my outlook and daily actions. It’s not a single moment but a continuous daily decision to reject sin’s pull and align my heart and will towards righteousness. This journey requires honest self-reflection and willingness to change. Romans 6:16 highlights that obedience defines whom we serve—choosing sin enslaves us to death, while obedience to God leads to life. Recognizing that surrender is not passive but active obedience reshapes surrender as a powerful, liberating commitment rather than a weakness. Practicing surrender means intentionally cultivating spiritual disciplines like prayer, reading scripture, and surrounding oneself with encouraging community. It also involves trusting God’s purpose amidst challenges instead of aimlessly drifting through life. This conscious surrender provides clarity, peace, and strengthens resilience. Whether you feel lost or stuck, reflecting on who you truly surrender to can be life altering. It opens the door to freedom, purpose, and everlasting life as intended in creation. This ongoing choice impacts every facet of our existence—mind, heart, and actions—and invites us into a deeper relationship with God.
