🍰 DIY Pie Hot Pads — My Easy Flip-Inside-Out Method
A beginner-friendly way to sew adorable fruit pie hot pads!
No binding needed — the backing becomes the finished edge, and the lattice stitching doubles as your quilting. 🧵🥧
✂️ What You’ll Need
8" circle template
Fruit print fabric (top)
10×10" squares (backing)
Batting + insulated lining
Beige bias tape or fabric strips (for lattice)
Rickrack (crust edge)
Temporary spray adhesive
Thread + sewing machine
Optional: ribbon/fabric for a hanging loop
🥧 HOW I MADE MINE
1️⃣ Cut Your Circles
For each hot pad, cut:
1 fruit top circle
1 backing circle
1 batting circle
1 insulated circle
(Each one 8".)
2️⃣ Layer & Sew (Flip Method!)
Stack the pieces in this order:
Backing – right side up
→ Fruit top – right side down
→ Batting
→ Insulation
Sew all the way around, leaving a 2–3" gap for turning.
3️⃣ Flip & Finish the Edges
Flip the hot pad right-side out through the gap.
Smooth the edges and top-stitch the opening closed.
Now you have a clean, finished circle with no exposed seams!
4️⃣ Add Lattice Using Spray Adhesive
Lightly spray the front of your circle with temporary adhesive.
Lay out your lattice strips in a criss-cross pie pattern.
Press to temporarily secure.
5️⃣ Stitch the Lattice (This is Your Quilting!)
Sew around the edges of each lattice strip to secure them.
Because the stitching goes through all the layers, it works as:
✔️ your quilting
✔️ your topstitching
✔️ your decorative lattice detail
No separate quilting step needed!
6️⃣ Add the Crust Edge
Sew rickrack around the outside edge to create the pie crust look.
Go slowly around curves for a smooth finish.
7️⃣ Optional: Add a Hanging Loop
Tuck a folded strip of fabric or ribbon under the rickrack and stitch in place.
🎉 Finished!
