Being an RBT is incredibly rewarding, but let's be real – the RBT life can also be incredibly demanding. I've definitely had days where I felt utterly tired after a full day of behavior plans and meltdowns.... It's easy to reach that point of burnout where you question everything, even if your paycheck is keeping you afloat. But I've learned some key strategies that help me prevent ABA therapist burnout and maintain a fulfilling career. First, setting boundaries is non-negotiable. As RBTs, we often have big hearts and want to do everything for our clients, but that can lead to overcommitment. I've learned to say no politely when my plate is full, and to strictly separate work from personal time. When I'm off the clock, I'm OFF the clock. No checking emails, no thinking about sessions until the next day. This mental break is crucial for recharging. Secondly, prioritize self-care that truly works for you. For me, that means scheduling in time for exercise – even if it's just a 30-minute walk – and making sure I get enough sleep. I also love to unwind with a good book or connect with friends outside of work. It's not selfish; it's essential. When you're well-rested and happy, you're a better therapist. Think about it: how can you regulate a client's emotions if you can't regulate your own? Another huge factor in preventing burnout is having a strong support system. This includes regular, high-quality supervision, but also connecting with other RBTs. Sharing experiences, challenges, and successes with peers who understand what you're going through can be incredibly validating. We can brainstorm solutions, lend an ear, and remind each other why we chose this path. There have been so many times when I felt like I was the only one struggling, and then a quick chat with a colleague made all the difference. Finally, I constantly remind myself of the 'why.' When I'm feeling overwhelmed by the behavior plans and meltdowns, I then I remember - the incredible progress my clients make, the joy on a parent's face, or the small victories that might seem insignificant to others but mean the world to us. This helps shift my perspective from the daily grind to the bigger picture of the impact I'm making. It’s how I maintain my passion and continue to thrive, proving that you can absolutely lead a sustainable and meaningful RBT life and yes, be a six figure RBT without sacrificing your mental health. It's all about intentional strategies and honoring your own well-being.
