ð A secret shop on Mount Kurama, before hiking the sacred path of Kyoto.
Today we are going to review Yoshuji (
This shop is located on the ascent of Kurama Temple, so it was very eye-catching at first sight, and as we intend to walk the Kurama-Kifune route today, I wanted to try traditional local food before I started.
Yoshuji is a Shojin Ryori-style vegetarian restaurant, or the food of the Zen Church, which is a non-meat food, emphasizes simplicity, and draws out as much as possible the natural flavors of raw materials, including avoiding certain pungent aromatic vegetables in accordance with Zen practices.
The atmosphere inside the store feels very warm and friendly. The store itself is decorated with wood in the traditional Japanese style. It feels relaxed from the step in. The staff is lovely and tries to communicate fully with us, even if we can't speak Japanese.
There is not much to choose from in the menu, mainly Zen vegetarian food sets. We choose Uzu Tororo Soba (Cold) for 1,800 yen. Inside the set is cold soba, served with side dishes and several Shojin Ryori-based vegetable menus.
For us, the soba is very delicious. The lines are very good. Eat with broth and then get along with it. Most of the side dishes are vegetable menus, which honestly admit that we are not sure what it is. ð But the most impressive menu is' sweet mishosa roast tofu 'that is too delicious to become the favorite menu of this set.
Another interesting thing is that the tea is available for free. It is Kyoto Hauji Bancha, Kyoto's traditional roasted tea. The tea is roasted with wood charcoal and boiled with water from Mount Kurama. It helps with digestion and has a refreshing feeling after the meal, which fits well with the atmosphere of the shop and the surrounding nature.
Overall, it may not be a tasting meal, but a meal that feels calm, simple, and fits perfectly with Kurama's atmosphere, like a light break before entering the natural path between Kurama and Kifune. ð
