... Read moreLiving as an American in Paris often comes with unexpected cultural surprises that can sometimes feel like subtle forms of rejection or misunderstanding. From my experience, much of this perceived friction boils down to differences in social norms and communication styles rather than outright dislike. For example, Americans are often known for their openness, friendliness, and eagerness to engage strangers in conversation. In contrast, the French—especially in Paris—often prioritize privacy and may come across as more reserved or formal. This contrast can lead to Americans feeling dismissed or unwelcome, even when no negative intent exists. Another factor is the stereotype that some French people hold about Americans being loud or culturally insensitive. While this is certainly not true for everyone, awareness of local customs and etiquette goes a long way in easing tensions. Taking time to learn basic French greetings, dining manners, and social cues can foster a more positive exchange. Additionally, the fast pace and casual nature of American culture can clash with the French appreciation for tradition and discretion. Embracing local customs—such as enjoying conversations over long meals or respecting personal space—helps bridge gaps. In my own journey as an expat, I've found that patience and genuine interest in the culture are key to overcoming culture shock. Instead of seeing the perceived dislike as hostility, I try to interpret it as a cultural difference waiting to be understood. Over time, small gestures of respect and adapting to French social nuances have opened up rewarding connections. For anyone planning to live or travel extensively in Paris, understanding these cultural dynamics is invaluable. It not only enhances your experience but also allows for meaningful relationships that transcend initial misunderstandings. Ultimately, culture shock is a natural part of cross-cultural living, but with empathy and effort, it can transform into a deeper appreciation of both American and French ways of life.

It’s pretty simple actually! People never know why we call ourselves that, and always have soooo many, super creative guesses as to what the 27 in 27 Travels stands for! The truth is that to us 27 just stands for our entire relationship to eachother! We became girlfriends on the 27th of January

Why We Focus on The Bad (Negativity Bias)
Ever wonder why the news only covers negative things? Or why so many people are drawn to true crime and serial killer shows? It all comes down to something psychologists call the negativity bias—our brain’s tendency to focus on the bad far more than the good. This instinct has helped humans surviv
