Recently I hit 2,000 subscribers on YouTube!! I’m truly so honored and grateful.
I left my full-time job back in September to pursue YouTube and take a chance on my dreams, and I still can’t believe I get to wake up and create videos every day as my job.
I’ve learned so much since starting my channel a little over two years ago. I hope these learnings can inspire anyone who’s staring out, trying to grow, or who wants to start their own channel soon.
1. These numbers represent real people.
It’s easy to detach from the fact that every view, like, comment, or subscriber is a REAL person out there in the world that cares about what you have to say. Whether you have 1000 views or 10 views, each of those represent people. 2k subscribers feels like very little in the world of YouTube, but imagining all those people in a room with me reminds me that it’s something to be proud of and celebrate.
2. Getting good takes practice.
YouTube requires so many different skill sets, from graphic design to editing, videography, sound design, and talking to a camera. It takes time to learn how to do each well. This process can be frustrating, but I would encourage anyone reading this to just take your time and be kind to yourself. I like to shoot for small improvements with each video. These really do accumulate over time!
3. Focus on what you can control.
I wasted a lot of time focusing on performance of videos, which was almost totally outside of my control. Along the way, I’ve shifted my focus to my inputs: the energy I can put towards creating the best videos possible, that align with my mission and vision for my channel.
4. Make things you love.
The more I’ve focused on creating things I love (instead of creating what I think will perform well), the better my videos have performed. I really believe passion and authenticity shine through, above everything else. It seems so simple, but it took me a long time to learn. If I could give myself one piece of advice way back at the beginning of my channel, that would be it.
