Rating Books by the Slow Burn Queen

Mariana Zapata writes books JUST for me.

The slow burn queen has a way of making you PINE for these relationships. My first read by her was All Rhodes Lead Here about 4 years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. However, while she has some of my favorites of all time, I don’t love every single one…

When Gracie Met the Grump 🦸3.5/5 🌟 Did you know MZ was writing super hero romance before it was popular?? I sure didn’t, but boy am I happy she did. This is unusual as far as paranormal and superhero romances go, but 100% worth reading. In this one, I would’ve liked a liiiittle more from the MMC.

The Wall of Winnipeg & Me 🏈 5/5 🌟 ten toes down one of my favorite books of all time. Mr. Wall of Winnipeg is SO SO SO perfect - reserved, strong, patient… The slow burn in this one solidified my love and loyalty to MZ. I might reread it right now.

All Rhodes Lead Here 🌲 4.5/5 🌟 my first venture into MZ and I was not prepared for how sloooow the burn was. I didn’t know her game. Both main characters hit me so personally here, and I loved the quiet, serene feel of the story, offset by that sizzling chemistry between our leads. And who doesn’t love a single dad?

Kulti ⚽️ 3/5 🌟 okay, okay… not my favorite by her, but still a fun read and I had a really good time. I think I struggled with the Kulti himself and their relationship. I’m not sure if it was the age gap, or just that something was missing from the book for me. However, loved the competitive natures of both characters and how hard our leading lady worked. My girl was no joke. A little spicier than the others, if I recall.

... Read moreAs a longtime fan of slow burn romance, I can personally attest to the unique charm that Mariana Zapata's novels bring to the genre. What sets her apart is the way she crafts relationships that develop gradually, allowing readers to truly savor every moment of emotional build-up. For instance, in "The Wall of Winnipeg & Me," the protagonist's reserved and patient nature perfectly complements the storyline, making it one of my all-time favorites. I found myself rooting for the characters in a way that few books have made me feel. What’s fascinating about Zapata’s work is how she experiments with different sub-genres, like in "When Gracie Met the Grump," where she blends superhero elements into her slow burn formula. This introduces a refreshing twist for readers used to more traditional romance plots. Although I personally desired a bit more depth from the male main character, the unconventional approach is a welcome change and expands the appeal of her writing. Slow burn storytelling requires patience, but when executed well—as seen in "All Rhodes Lead Here"—it creates such a rewarding experience. The quiet yet intense chemistry between the characters reflects a maturity in romance writing that focuses on emotional growth rather than instant attraction. This book’s portrayal of a single dad adds an authentic and relatable layer to the narrative, increasing its cozy and heartfelt atmosphere. On the flip side, not all books appealed equally. For example, "Kulti" presented challenges for me with the age gap and the dynamics between the lead characters. However, the competitive spirit and determination of the female lead provided a compelling counterbalance, showcasing Zapata’s skill in creating layered characters. Overall, if you enjoy romance that builds slowly but meaningfully, Mariana Zapata’s books are definitely worth exploring. The deliberate pacing allows you to savor every interaction and emotional milestone, making her stories feel more genuine and impactful. Whether you’re a fan of heartfelt single dad stories or enjoy a bit of a twist with superhero elements, her novels offer something special in the slow burn romance niche.
