Our first apartment nightmare STORYTIME…

We were getting married in two months, and we moved him in first, and I was moving in after we got married.

I was the first one to walk into the apartment the day we got our keys. He had to work, so I took my mom with me for the first official walkthrough of my fiancé and I’s soon to be home.

Upon opening the door, the FIRST thing I noticed was the smell. The complex is nice and relatively new, and it had granite countertops and hardwood floors. So like… what was the smell? WHY did it smell?

It reeked of cat urine 😢

They told us they replaced the carpet, and we had believed them. We called the leasing manager and they said they would do a treatment that basically took all the oxygen out of the apartment and neutralized the smell. So we scheduled that for the soonest they could, which was the following week.

My mom and I immediately left for Walmart to go buy air fresheners, candles, and anything that could cover the smell. Because it was SO bad.

Then the worst part happened, my mom was sitting on the carpet in one of the bedrooms, and a flea jumped on her. Upon further investigation there were fleas in the apartment 😭

I relayed all of this to my fiancé and we adjusted moving plans, then I got BACK on the phone with the leasing manager. Luckily they were prompt in coming right over and investigating theirselves. They helped us get rid of the fleas and the smell, but it took a bit of convincing (they agreed to replace the carpet, which I still don’t know if they had done that before we moved in like they said they had). And also, we found cat food still under the dryer?? I guess they didn’t pay much attention to cleaning the place lol.

All it all, it turned out fine. But at the time, it felt like a nightmare to two young kids who are learning about living on their own lol.

We own our own house now, and of course home ownership comes with its own struggles, but I’m glad we got the experience of having and renting an apartment.

... Read moreAfter our first apartment nightmare – the cat urine smell, the fleas, and the general chaos – I realized how much I wish we’d known before signing that lease! Moving into your very first empty apartment is such an exciting milestone, especially when you see those beautiful hardwood floors and a clean, carpeted bedroom. But as we learned the hard way, what looks perfect on the surface can hide some serious surprises. To help anyone else avoid their own 'worst apartment' scenario, I've put together some crucial tips based on our experience. Trust me, these are things you don't think about until you're elbow-deep in a crisis! 1. The All-Important Empty Apartment Inspection: When you first get the keys and walk into an empty apartment, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement. But this is your moment to be a detective! Don’t just admire the open space. Get down on your hands and knees and literally sniff around. That mysterious cat urine smell we encountered was nearly impossible to remove, so checking for odors like pet smells, mold, or stale smoke is paramount. Open every cabinet, closet, and even the oven – residual smells can linger. Don't forget to inspect under sinks and around windows for signs of water damage. Turn on all faucets, flush toilets, and test every light switch and electrical outlet (bring a phone charger!). This thorough check of your 'first apartment empty room' can save you so much grief. 2. Document EVERYTHING Before Moving Boxes: This step is non-negotiable. Before even one moving box enters the door, take photos and videos of *everything*. Every scratch on the hardwood floors, every stain on the carpeted bedroom, any cracks in the walls, even minor scuffs. We wish we had more detailed proof when we had to confront our leasing manager about the issues. This visual record is your best defense if there are disputes about damages when you eventually move out. It’s also crucial for showing the initial state of the apartment if you discover issues like pests or severe odors after you’ve settled in. 3. Dealing with Unexpected Pests (Like Our Fleas!): Finding fleas in our supposed 'clean' apartment was a huge shock. When inspecting, look closely at window sills, along baseboards, and especially in carpeted areas for any signs of insects – dead or alive. If you find any pests, report it immediately and get it in writing. Don't just take their word for a 'treatment.' Push for a thorough and professional extermination, and make sure you understand the follow-up process. Prevention is key too: once you're in, keep your space clean, and if you have pets, ensure they’re on preventative treatments. 4. Communicating with Your Landlord/Leasing Manager: This is where being a 'young adult' learning about living on your own can feel intimidating. However, remember you have rights as a tenant. If you encounter issues like persistent odors or pests, report them promptly and in writing (email is great for this). Follow up consistently but politely. Be firm about your expectations for resolution, whether it's replacing carpets or professional cleaning, rather than just quick fixes. Our experience taught us that sometimes you have to advocate strongly for yourself to get things properly addressed. Don't be afraid to escalate if necessary, but always maintain a clear, documented communication trail. While our first apartment was a 'worst apartment' story at the time, it taught us invaluable lessons. Every challenge is a learning opportunity, and now we know exactly what to look for and how to handle unexpected surprises in any future rental or home.

I hope they painted the floor with KILZ before laying more carpet down. Otherwise the smell does come back. Pet smells are the worst to cover up and never go away. Only KILZ can achieve that!
