First timer recap of the Big Island, HI 🌺

My first trip to Hawaii's Big Island completely blew me away! It truly was the best trip of my life, a 10000/10 recommendation for anyone looking for an incredible adventure. This island offers such a diverse landscape and so many unique experiences that I just had to share more about what made it so special. One of the absolute highlights for me was chasing waterfalls. Akaka Falls State Park is a must-see, with its breathtaking 442-foot cascade plunging into a lush gorge. It's an easy, paved walk through a rainforest, and the views are just spectacular. Rainbow Falls, conveniently located near Hilo, is another gem, especially in the morning when you might catch a rainbow forming in its mist. And those beaches! The black sand beaches are truly something else. Punalu'u Black Sand Beach was incredible, not just for its unique volcanic sand, but also for the sea turtles often basking on the shore. Remember to keep a respectful distance from these beautiful creatures. If you're up for an adventure, the hike to Papakolea Green Sand Beach is challenging but rewards you with one of only four green sand beaches in the world – an unforgettable sight. Let's talk food – specifically poke! Oh my gosh, the fresh poke on the Big Island is out of this world. I tried it at a few local markets and smaller eateries, and each time it was incredibly fresh and flavorful. So many varieties to choose from, definitely a culinary experience that made me say "yum!" every single time. Don't leave without trying some fresh catch of the day, too. Of course, you can't visit the Big Island without experiencing the volcanoes. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is an absolute wonder. Driving along Crater Rim Drive and seeing the steam vents, lava tubes like Nahuku (Thurston Lava Tube), and the vast calderas really makes you feel connected to the powerful forces of nature. While Kīlauea might not always be actively erupting with visible lava flows, the sheer scale and geological history of the park are mesmerizing. For a completely different volcanic experience, consider a trip up Mauna Kea for stargazing – the clear skies and high elevation offer some of the best astronomical views on Earth. Just remember to dress warmly, as it gets very cold at the summit! Getting around the Big Island really requires a car, as attractions are spread out. The weather can also vary dramatically from one side of the island to the other, and with elevation changes, so pack layers! Sunscreen, a good hat, and plenty of water are also essential. Overall, my first trip was an incredible mix of adventure, relaxation, and awe-inspiring natural beauty. I'm already dreaming of my next visit!
